Joe Rogan loves nature. An outdoor enthusiast, the UFC commentator hunts his own elk and regularly goes on camping trips. His fans know that few things get the JRE podcast host as excited or engaged as when he is talking about animals.

From his fascination with apes and grizzly bears to the morbid pleasure with which he talks about the man-eating tigers of the Sunderbans, Rogan is quite evidently enchanted by wild animals. And this fascination was further apparent on a recent episode of his podcast, where he talked about how turtles are even more vicious than piranhas and marveled at the lifespan of these shelled animals.

Joe Rogan awestruck at 500-year-old turtle

On episode #2110 of the JRE podcast, Joe Rogan told Fahim Anwar about his experiences of raising turtles, saying that the amphibians were even more ruthless than the piranhas he kept. While he was fond of the animals, he chose to get rid of them after having kids due to hygiene concerns. “I had turtles, I had to get rid of them when I had babies. Because turtles, they’re dirty little creatures, you don’t wanna have that stuff around. But they were ruthless. I would feed them goldfish, I had piranhas at one point of time and they were not nearly as ruthless as these f***ing turtles,” he said.

Rogan recounted how there was one turtle that reportedly was five hundred years old and was amazed that an animal could have lived for so long, having been born before the founding of the United States and being older than even George Washington.

“There’s one turtle, there’s some f***ing turtle that they think it’s really old… Large turtles. That’s what I’m talking about, 500-years-old. That’s f***ing bonkers man. That’s like pre-George Washington, wrap your head around that. You’re a baby turtle, you’re just f***ing chilling, all of a sudden you see all these boats pull up. And you’re like ‘This isn’t gonna be anything’,” he added.

And while Rogan was fascinated by turtles, he also expressed his frustration with the modern digital world to his fellow comic friend Anwar during the podcast.

Rogan finds podcasting therapeutic

During the podcast, Joe Rogan revealed that podcasting was not only financially beneficial to him but also helped him unwind since he could get away from his phone and the internet while he was shooting a podcast episode, calling it a form of therapy.

“It’s one of the things I love about podcasts, for three hours I’m not going to see what’s going on in the world, I’m locked in, I don’t have to think about other things, and I’m really lucky. I think it’s a form of therapy in a weird way,” Rogan told Anwar.

The Italian-American, who recently signed a contract extension with Spotify reportedly worth around $250 million, felt it very difficult to get away from his phone, which he felt ran his life. While he enjoyed being able to stay in regular contact with his friends, he found it was taking up too much of his time.
