Is Kamala Harris's social media oversight plan a threat to free speech or a necessary regulation?

One of the key issues Kamala Harris brought up during her presidential election campaign is the issues surrounding social media. These platforms have seen multiple issues in the past, like spreading misinformation, among many others. Harris plans to install an infrastructure to monitor what’s taking place on social media. However, Joe Rogan doesn’t seem too pleased with these plans and has raised some concerns regarding it.

Kamala Harris claims supervision of social media activity is of utmost importance. “They [social media posts] are directly speaking to millions and millions of people without any level of oversight regulation,” the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate stated during a recent interview. But Joe Rogan believes that her social media policy is out of the question because of people’s right to free speech.

“Oversight and regulation for free speech is ridiculous. Just that alone. There’s no way to misconstrue that,” Joe Rogan stated during a recent JRE episode over a month ago. “What she was saying is what I was thinking she was saying… She wants government oversight and regulation for social media. That’s crazy!”

He referenced what Mark Zuckerberg claimed to be his biggest regret ever. It was a political miscalculation when Facebook was widely criticized for spreading misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Meta CEO, although he admitted his mistake, didn’t think his platform was in the wrong. Nevertheless, Zuckerberg accepted what people had to say about Facebook. Similarly, Joe Rogan appeared to side with the billionaire, claiming that free speech means there are “no rules” on social media platforms.

“It’s also saying that the very thing that Mark Zuckerberg regrets should be happening. Like, she’s essentially saying, ‘Why should they have different rules for Facebook than they do for Twitter [X]… We don’t have rules. We have First Amendment rights of free speech,” Joe Rogan added. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris is reportedly looking to appear on the 57-year-old’s podcast. So could that be the time when Rogan confronts her about her policy?

Kamala Harris could land on Joe Rogan’s podcast

Certain big-time media outlets like ‘Reuters’ cited recently that they have sources claiming that Kamala Harris is pursuing options to appear on Joe Rogan’s podcast before Donald Trump. The former president has been one of the most requested guests on the multi-million-dollar podcast. However, so far, the host isn’t willing to entertain Trump in any shape or form. For Harris, by the way, her JRE appearance is reportedly a move to win over the male voters in the country and garner a strong base of support.
