Did you know that the #1 UFC pound-for-pound star Jon Jones has a near-perfect UFC record, if not for just one unfortunate defeat? Arguably the greatest fighter to ever grace the Octagon, ‘Bones’ is a nightmare for all title challengers that dare stand in his way.

Jones boasts a roster of 13 spectacular title defenses – and became the youngest champ in UFC history at the age of 23. What’s more – he has also been lauded by world-class soccer star Neymar for his UFC 285 win. But how can a fighter of such remarkable caliber lose a fight? Well, according to UFC commentator Joe Rogan, ‘Bones’s loss is all thanks to the “dumbest” rule in MMA. And why would the UFC commentator dub one of his loved sport’s rules as the “dumbest”? Flashback to The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale in Las Vegas. Jones came into the fight as a highly-touted prospect at the time. His rival, Matt Hamill, was an experienced wrestler with a solid record. But the fight ended in a bizarre chain of events after Hamill was declared the winner by disqualification due to illegal elbow strikes.

The 55-year-old Rogan still regards the judges’ decision that day to be utterly nonsensical. During Episode #2012 on his JRE podcast, the UFC commentator voiced his dissatisfaction with the rule due to which Jones was disqualified.

According to Rogan, the rule in question pertains to “12 to 6 elbows,” a term that denotes the trajectory of elbow strikes. The JRE host kicked off his arguments, saying, “That’s a 100% bullsh*t – he was on top of this guy smashing him, beating the f**k out of him.”

What’s more – revealing what led to Jones’ disqualification, Rogan added, “They said that he did 12 to 6 elbows which are the dumbest f***ing ever rule in MMA. ”

The roots of this controversial rule trace back to the early days of MMA regulation. It was the time when athletic commissions were just initially sanctioning the sport. So what is the story behind the much-debated ’12 to 6′ elbows?

During his rant, Joe Rogan also uncovered the bizarre reason behind the commission’s decision to rule out 12 to 6 elbow strikes. He said, “It’s literally because the athletic commissions that were sanctioning MMA initially – they said, ‘You know, we’ve seen those things on ESPN where people break bricks with their elbows. You can’t do that, it’s too dangerous…’”

This historical context contributed to the establishment of a rule is the “dumbest,” argues Rogan. Also, expressing his distaste for such an MMA regulation, he concludes his arguments by stating, “And it’s the dumbest rule. It doesn’t make any sense. A regular elbow is just as hard…”
