The veteran referee John McCarthy expressed strong distaste as he touched upon the recent controversy that popped up from Fury FC. The incident happened on Friday at the Fury FC 76 in San Antonio during the competitive bout between Edgar Chairez and Gianni Vazquez. While Vazquez squeezed and choked his opponent, and his opponent lay motionless on the canvas, the referee Frank Collazo didn’t intervene. As the concerning clip made rounds on the internet, the same reached the seasoned referee’s feed. The former referee addressed the perplexing exhibit of officiating duties and also questioned the referee’s skill. Further, ‘Big John’, who spent decades officiating the fights, pointed out the hazards associated with incompetent referees handling their duties.
Notably, the 60-year-old sat down with Josh Thomson in ep. #346 of their MMA podcast, ‘Weighting In’. In one of the segments, the duo discussed the controversy that engulfed the Texas Commission for appointing Frank Collazo.
John McCarthy believes the referee is detrimental to the fighters’ safety

The former UFC associate, while breaking down the details of the fight, questioned the appointment by the commission. Thus, he said, “You take a look and you go, who are you putting in that case if they don’t know what they’re looking at? What are you thinking?”
Following this, the Los Angeles native revealed Chairez’s corner screamed at the inspector to call off the fight. However, the inspector turned down their requests even after the corner threw water bottles in the cage.
Hence, the host expressed, “The first person I would have run over is that freaking referee.”
Moreover, the Bellator commentator had a word of caution to the commission. He continued and included, “If you are part of that commission, that referee should not be part of MMA right now at all. He needs training.”
“If you want to keep him around, good keep him around. He shouldn’t be in there with fighters because he is a detriment to their safety. He is someone that doesn’t know what he’s looking at. And that can happen in the next fight,” he later on added.

Lastly, McCarthy suggested the referee would err again because he didn’t know what to look for.
