“That Person Had To Spend About $80,000 on Drugs…”: Hollywood Star and Martial Artist Michael Jai White Once Disclosed the Dark Side of Bodybuilding

Counted amongst the greatest martial artists of the modern world, Michael Jai White has provided some valuable input to various martial arts forms. However, his recent take on the cost of bodybuilding was nothing short of shocking. During an interview with ‘Vlad TV’, a few years ago, the Hollywood star revealed the dark side of the bodybuilding world.

3 years ago, White disclosed the tragic truth about bodybuilding and martial arts. During the conversation with Vladimir Lyubovny, the actor disclosed that bodybuilders and power-lifters didn’t get the amount of money that the netizens thought they did. When asked about the top prize, the actor said, “It keeps going up. But for a long time it was like a $100,000, $200,000. You know it was a trip. It was a $100,000 as the top prize in the Arnold [Schwarzenegger], and, and Mr. Olympia, and things like, you know. And then, usually, that person had to spend about $80,000 in drugs that year.” It was indeed an eye-opening conversation.

Although netizens were fairly aware of the low fighter pay in the UFC, White opened their eyes about the bodybuilders, as well. Only one contender receives the top prize, while the others lie in disappointment. Moreover, not even the winners can get the complete amount of their winnings.

The duo were pretty skeptical regarding the things that the bodybuilders did to their body, just to get a medal. According to them, it was simply unnecessary to jeopardize one’s health. Soon after, the talk shifted to their low pay scale.

During the discussion, White and Lyubovny stumbled upon the sensitive topic of the low pay scale of the professionals involved in martial arts, bodybuilding, and weight lifting. Although White is a renowned martial artist, his opinion on the bodybuilding world was quite prominent. Building one’s body came with a multitude of sacrifices and only one man could get his hands on the top prize.

It has been brought up quite often that UFC fighters are being paid way less than what many people imagine. But, White has laid bare the less attractive side of bodybuilding as well.
