The welterweight division has found a brand new dominant champion in ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Kamaru Usman. The 34-year-old fighter, who dethroned Tyron Woodley back at UFC 235 in 2019, has been ruling the division ever since. In his three-year-long title reign, the champion has managed to best every major fighter in the division.
With 5 title defenses under his belt and multiple victories over the number one contenders, it is quite difficult to find him a fresh opponent. However, Dana White believes Leon Edwards has earned his shot at the title.

In a conversation with the TSN Network, he broke the news with the world. The UFC President said, “100% yeah, that kid had a rough run. He deserves it. If you look at it, Colby lost to him twice, Gilbert’s lost, Leon’s next, he is number 3.“
Although this will be another rematch, it won’t be in the same mold as the Covington and Masvidal rematches. This is because ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ and ‘Rocky’ fought four years before Usman claimed the gold.
Kamaru Usman has already bested Leon Edwards back in the early days
Leon Edwards is currently riding the wave of an impressive nine-fight win streak. Incidentally, his last loss in the promotion came at the hands of the reigning champion, who smothered him for 3 rounds straight.

However, as both fighters have evolved tremendously since that fight, things won’t be the same. Usman has added striking into his game and has already showcased his brilliance in that regard. Meanwhile, Edwards, in his last outing against Nate Diaz, showcased a chink in his armor.
This could be costly against Usman’s new version. Hence, despite ‘Rocky’ having showcased top-level performances, it does not seem like he has a chance against Usman in the rematch.

Nevertheless, Edwards will try his best to avenge his defeat.
