Conor McGregor has etched his name in history as the richest UFC fighter of all time. However, his journey to the top is nothing short of a captivating storybook tale. McGregor’s humble beginnings as a plumber have paved the way for him to become one of the highest paid athletes in the world, but not without overcoming numerous setbacks and hardships along the way.
Even his long-time coach, John Kavanagh, has shared stories about McGregor’s struggles during his early days. At one point, the fighter was unable to pay his coach’s fees. Similarly, during his early days in MMA, McGregor dreamed of entering the UFC but had a hard time even managing $250 dollars for his walkout song for a fight. He tried to bargain his way out of the situation, highlighting his resourcefulness in the face of adversity.

In 2012, Conor McGregor was preparing for his lightweight championship fight at Cage Warriors against Ivan Buchinger. The ambitious Irishman had a modest desire to have a walkout song for his title fight. However, his financial condition at the time didn’t match up with his wish.
A chat between McGregor and music producer Mikey Rukus surfaced online from May 2012, where Rukus asked for $250 to offer McGregor a walkout song. However, that amount at that time was beyond McGregor’s reach, being ‘too pricey’. The chat shows how McGregor tried his best to negotiate the price.
McGregor’s message:
“I’d love to do it mate i really would bit that is way too pricey,,
This fight is going live acoss the world sky sports, espn and mma junkie for the biggest european MMA belt there is… alot of guys have got to the ufc with the cagewarriors strap mike bisping., ross pearson, dan hardy…I could put your logo on my gear and give you a shout out. its good solid exposure for your business…but 250 dollars is heavy for the level i am at”.
In December 2012, during the fight, the Dubliner put on a brilliant performance and knocked out Buchinger in the opening round of the fight, earning him the lightweight title in the promotion. After that, ‘The Notorious’ entered Dana White‘s promotion, and the rest is history. Four years later, McGregor became the first double champion in two divisions, and from thereon, it was just an uphill slope for him to eventually become the richest MMA fighter of all time in the world. Mikey Rukus who then was a regional music producer for MMA walkout music is now the Director of Music Production at All Elite Wrestling, the second-largest wrestling promotion in the world. So fans will cherish this interaction between the two when they weren’t as successful as they are now.
Fast forward to today, McGregor has been out of action for a while now owing to a devastating leg injury he incurred in his last fight against Dustin Poirier. However, he is all fired up to return to the octagon. Despite having almost everything one can dream of, the Irishman is still hungry as ever.
‘The Notorious’ craves consistency now
After recovering from his leg injury, Conor McGregor is already back in action. Recently, he completed filming for the 31st season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’, where he will be seen coaching a team of UFC hopefuls against Michael Chandler‘s team, who will also be his opponent in his comeback fight later this year in a pay-per-view event.
Moreover, in an interview with Robbie Fox from ‘My Mom’s Basement’, McGregor shared his plans for the future, saying, “I hope for a hundred more fights. I hope for consistency, I’m working for consistency. I’ve been getting this on, off, on, off nonsense for too long. It’s via, fight politics, via injuries, via just life, you know. It does happen you know, it’s God’s plan. It’s all God, so I accept and understand it. But I’m excited and I’m hopeful that I can get a nice consecutive run of bouts.”
