Islam Makhachev’s title defense is directly correlated with his upcoming matches. Makhachev has caught the attention of certain fighters who aim to defeat the champion and take his title. Alex Volkanovski was one such fighter who was eager for a rematch against Makhachev earlier, but he was overlooked by Team Makhachev.
Recently Colby Covington seems to be interested in having a face-off with the lightweight champ. Makhachev’s head coach and team member Javier Mendez thinks that Makhachev should do what he likes, in a recent interview session with Helen Yee on her YouTube channel, Mendez added “Well, I’m totally opposite of everybody because, you know, obviously, I want Islam to go after what he wants – the champ-champ status”
Down in conversation, the head coach emphasized that he wants both Covington and Volkanovski to have a fight against Makhachev. He added ” But I also know that there’s still one fight that I think we would all like to see again. After hopefully he gets successful with the Oliveira fight, but you’ve got Gaethje, and you’ve got the Australian, Alex – you know he’s there. And Colby just came into the picture. So, in a perfect world, what I would like is what Islam wants because he would want the champ-champ status, so Colby would be the one I would pick. But if you are asking me the one I really want back, then I want to go with Alex.”

Islam Makhachev finds himself facing challenges from adversaries hailing from diverse weight categories. Colby Covington, the former interim welterweight champion and the current top-ranked contender, has boldly issued a challenge to Makhachev, expressing his belief in his ability to secure a knockout victory. In response, Makhachev dismissively characterizes Covington as “easy money” and articulates his intentions to square off against him post his title defense against Charles Oliveira, scheduled for UFC 294.
In the interim, the featherweight champion, Alex Volkanovski, has leveled allegations against Makhachev, asserting that he is evading a rematch. Volkanovski ventured into the lightweight division to challenge Makhachev for his championship at UFC 284, only to suffer defeat by unanimous decision. He contends that Makhachev is in pursuit of less challenging opponents, exemplified by his call-out to Leon Edwards following his triumph over Volkanovski. Volkanovski firmly asserts his readiness to confront Makhachev once more, under any circumstances.
