Everybody knows Jon Jones wants to fight Alex Pereira next. The ‘undisputed’ heavyweight champion, of course, is coming off a fantastic win over Stipe Miocic earlier this month and is now looking for mega-fights to shore up his legacy and make bank. Who better to do that than the biggest fighter in the promotion at the moment, which is Pereira, the UFC’s reigning light heavyweight champion?
Of course, Dana White has been consistently against a possible Jones-Pereira matchup, preferring Jones fight interim champ Tom Aspinall next. This hasn’t stopped the fans from speculating about how a clash between the two titans would go. In good news for these fans, Jones’ coach, Brandon Gibson broke down the two champions’ matchup.
“You know I think they both walk around at similar weights. I don’t know if Jon would ever go back down to 205. He could if he chose to, but man I think that’s a great stylistic matchup. Pereira has such dynamite in his hands and with his kicks, incredible pressure, championship mentality,” he said.

After profusely praising ‘Poatan’, the coach got down to brass tacks and revealed the biggest advantage Jones had over the Brazilian in his opinion.
“And to see what he’s accomplished and the streak he’s been on is something that has us excited to go and try to figure out and solve that puzzle. But Jon brings so many tools to the table I think it’s more challenging for another team and set of coaches to try to solve the riddle, the problem that is Jon Jones,” he added. But there are many more areas where ‘Bones’ has the clear upper hand.

Why Jon Jones is a stylistic nightmare for Alex Pereira
The reason Dana White doesn’t want Alex Pereira to fight Jon Jones is because of the obvious stylistic disadvantages the Brazilian has compared to Jones. After all, Jones is bigger and thus stronger than ‘Poatan’ and has a stellar ground game, which is all but absent in Pereira’s pure striking game.
Of course, this means that the light heavyweight champ could be easy prey for Jones. After all, ‘Bones’ could just take the Brazilian down and maul him there. On the other hand, Pereira is no slouch and has become quite adept at fighting in a way that doesn’t really give his opponents a chance to land takedowns.

But then again, this is Jon Jones we’re talking about, perhaps the most intelligent fighter in the history of this sport. If anyone could take Pereira down, it would most certainly be ‘Bones’. Even the striking, Pereira’s strongest suit, won’t be much of an advantage over Jones.
‘Bones’, after all, is one of the most dynamic strikers in the sport, with spinning elbows, knees, and back-fists galore. Not to mention Pereira has a tendency to drop his hands, which Jones will be able to capitalize on. Given all this, it is not difficult to see why Jones is so enthusiastic about wanting to fight Pereira. What do you think about Gibson’s take on a Jones-Pereira matchup?
