The JRE is quite infamous for extracting secrets and brutally honest opinions from the entities. And the same has been repeated with Craig Jones on the set. Talking to Joe Rogan, the BJJ superstar revealed the real reason why he liked the art of jiu-jitsu and it was closely linked to an overuse of steroids and strength training.

Of course, this wasn’t the only revelation that the star grappler made on the set of JRE. He also revealed that he had organized a tournament scheduled for August 2024. Therein, the world would witness the first-ever intergender grappling bout between Jones and Gabrielle Garcia. But whatever the condition, Jones seemed reluctant to hire a coach for strength and conditioning.

In episode #157 of the ‘Joe Rogan Experience’, the UFC color commentator asked Jones about his opinion on hiring a serious coach for strength and conditioning and asked if that would actually make a difference in the grappler’s performance. Jones replied, “Maybe, but I mean, like, I mean if there was a million dollars on the line, maybe…”

The response left the 56-year-old podcaster in a laughing fit. He argued that training his strength and conditioning his body was indeed his whole life, owing to the fact that Jones was a professional jiu-jitsu fighter. Thereafter, Craig Jones made the big revelation.

The 4-time ADCC champion said, “I mean, I love the technique and the strategy aspect of it, you know. Like, sometimes when I have lifted or taken more steroids than usual, it’s like I’m sitting overly… rely on my strength. What I love about jiu-jitsu is laying traps, tricking people, making people feel silly. That’s the part I like, rather than just… I wanna look jacked just for me… enough for the match.”

Jones was surprisingly against getting ‘too jacked’. Despite the benefits of looking aesthetically good, the grappler gave up on the idea of hiring a professional coach. When Rogan asked him if getting coached would improve his overall movement and mobility, Jones claimed that he wanted to look like ‘a weathered-out man’. He said, “But if, I mean, if I look too jacked, and I want to buy the instruction they be like ‘can’t f***ing do what that guy does’, you know. I gotta look like a weathered-out man out there.”

It indeed left Rogan baffled. But this wasn’t the only news that had the attention of the JRE host. An event scheduled for the ‘Craig Jones Invitational’ also had similar effects.

The first-ever intergender grappling bout

As the conversation continued, the legendary BJJ practitioner revealed that his age-old rivalry with Gabi Garcia would finally materialize at his invitational tournament. While the bout was previously scheduled for 2021, it was postponed due to a lack of streaming platforms. When Jones told that he had a fight with Garcia booked for August, Rogan could not believe it. He seemed to take it for a joke.

But the grappling star said, “A 100% gonna happen. We booked it, we signed this contract earlier. So like, I mean, I had to do a lot of things to get it done, you know?” Even this extracted a bit of laughter from the JRE host.
