If you had told a UFC fan at the beginning of this year that Sean Strickland would beat Israel Adesanya convincingly and become the UFC middleweight champion of the world, you would probably have been laughed out of the room.

Israel Adesanya, contrary to everyone’s expectations, was no match for ‘Tarzan’ at their bout at UFC 293. And the verbose and honest-to-a-fault Strickland savored his well-earned victory in the post-fight press conference.

Speaking to reporters after UFC 293, Strickland guessed how UFC boss Dana White and UFC executive VP, Hunter Campbell must have felt after he won. He said that they were probably regretting giving him the title shot, and couldn’t believe Strickland had beaten ‘Izzy’ and was the champion now.

“Yeah, right. How did this person get the belt? Who let this happen? Man, Hunter [Campbell] and Dana [White] are probably like, ‘This guy! How did we let this ret*rd get a belt? We messed up! Why did we agree to this? So many other options and we let Sean Strickland fight Izzy’. No, no, no! Hey, sorry guys!”

Another contrasted his refusal to trade in his beloved Hyundai Accent for a better car with flashy fighters like Conor McGregor:

“Dude’s ambition is to do up his Hyundai

The contrast with Connor and his clones is amazing”

One fan felt while Strickland was not the brightest, he has a good heart and is an honest and nice guy, which had endeared him to the new champion:

“Dude is incredibly stupid, but completely without malice, and seems to be genuinely a decent guy. I laughed at him before, but I find myself feeling the same as you.”

Another fan felt he cannot be stupid as he has been right too much recently:

“He’s right too often now to be stupid. I think he’s just authentic and has no filter.”

Clearly, fans, who may have been divided before the fight, are all in on the Strickland hype train. And it is easy to see why. He is extremely entertaining, open, unpretentious, and down-to-earth. But, one must not lose sight of the fact that despite this terrible loss, Adesanya is one of the greatest fighters in UFC history and has the ability to come back from difficult and humiliating losses to win, as he did against Alex PereiraSo, writing ‘Izzy’ off in the rematch would be a terrible mistake.
