A team of Japanese researchers managed to turn a catfish from male to female. You read that correctly. Reportedly, they achieved this result by utilizing soy compounds which famously contain high levels of estrogen. Rogan shared a post that highlighted this research on his IG account.

He wrote, “It’s getting weird out there, kids.” Could the caption be more fitting? It’s normal to be awestruck by such bizarre findings. Nevertheless, is it normal for such bizarre findings to be funded and welcomed? The answer is yes. The research was rather financially driven.

If there’s one person who’d know the value that money brings in, it’s Rogan. The research was carried out due to the higher demand for female catfishes in the market as opposed to males. The female grows faster and hence has a higher rate of being consumed. However, for now, the results of the experiment cannot be applied to fish that will be used for consumption.

Does this make things a little less weird? Some might say yes, and others might disagree completely. So what did the researchers have to say about the whole ordeal? Their motivations are known but how did they carry it all out? Here’s a little bit more about the research.

Did we just get catfished?

While the cultured catfish cannot be made available for consumption, the results still fascinate the scientists involved. They separated male catfish from the female to let them grow for 150 days in water mixed with isoflavone, a compound found in soybeans.

” . . . By making them all female, production efficiency will rise,” said Toshinao Ineno, the team’s leader. “This can be applied to other farm-raised fish whose females are more valuable.” Clearly, the idea is working and it’s working fantastically. The team is also considering applying similar strategies to sturgeon fishes. So maybe Joe Rogan might want to let this idea sink in before another type of fish returns to befuddle him.
