Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic are preparing to meet in the UFC 309 main event. There’s major hype surrounding the fight. However, there’s equally a lot of buzz going on about what follows the much-awaited clash. Fans have been speculating for a long time that both fighters might decide to hang up their gloves after the fight. Miocic is 42 years old and father time surely will take its toll on his performance soon, while Jon Jones has revealed his interest in calling it quits.
But why is Jon Jones retiring so early in his career? While it is true that he has already achieved more than one could even fathom to win in a lifetime, ‘Bones’ is still a top-tier fighter who still has a lot left in the tank. At least that’s what the fans believe. But what about ‘Bones’ and his coaching staff? Do they believe that Jon Jones could still fight? As per the words of his coach, Brandon Gibson, it surely seems like it. In fact, he can be a major threat to Stipe Miocic.
According to coach Gibson, Miocic might find it difficult to go one-on-one against ‘Bones.’ In an interview with MMAFighting, Jones’ coach revealed that according to him, Jones is actually in the prime of his career. He said, “He is getting stronger, faster, more skilled at heavyweight. Early on, to make that jump from light heavyweight, to get up to heavyweight was putting on a lot of size, a lot of mass. Now his body has gotten very accustomed to that size. You saw his recent photo how lean he’s getting for heavyweight and then we’ve just assembled this super team of training partners and coaches.”

Coach Gibson further added that Stipe Miocic‘s coaching staff would find it difficult to coach against Jon Jones because ‘Bones’ is always learning and keeps on adding new tools to his arsenal. This makes him a highly unpredictable opponent to coach against. Hence, the major verdict was dropped. “He would be a nightmare to coach against because there’s no path to victory against Jon Jones.”

It would be a shame if Jones decided to hang up his gloves despite being at his physical peak. Fans have been rooting for him to have one last dance against interim Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall. In fact, fans claim that ‘Bones’ is actually retiring to avoid the fight. However, the former UFC light heavyweight champion’s camp has set the record straight with this interview. But what about Miocic? How’s his preparation for the fight going on?

Stipe Miocic reveals his plans for Jon Jones fight
While everyone in the MMA realm has had their say on the upcoming UFC heavyweight title fight at UFC 309, Stipe Miocic has remained low-key. Throughout the heavyweight title debate, Miocic has kept his head down working. The fight should have taken place last November at UFC 295, but Jones tore his pectoral muscle, delaying the fight.
But now that the fight is booked again, Miocic has remained relatively calm. With the fight now just around the corner, Miocic is confident that he can take control of the fight and won’t wait to find out what kind of game plan Jones will bring. “Jon Jones does a lot of things good, but I have great coaches, great teammates, and they make me prepared for whatever happens. I’m not going to wait for what he’s going to do, I’m going to do what I want to do.”

At 42 years old, Miocic knows that he does not have many days left in the sport. However, he’s not ready to say that UFC 309 will be his last stint in the octagon. “I don’t know. I say it after every fight, I think about retiring. So, we’ll see. Right now, I’m just worried about the fight, and I can worry about that after it until it happens.” Well, it sure looks like Miocic is simply focused on getting his hands on the belt before he hangs his gloves. But do you think he would be able to pull it off? Let us know in the comments.
