Is Adesanya's choice of sparring partners a sign he's losing his edge in the UFC?

Israel Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis are ready to settle their differences and conclude the ‘Real African’ debate once and for all at UFC 305. About a year ago, DDP raised quite some eyebrows as he questioned if the UFC championship belts ever go to Africa. Without a doubt, the words didn’t sit well with the former two-time UFC middleweight champion. The spat between Adesanya and Du Plessis made the fans wait in great anticipation for a fight to materialize between them. Now, as the date for their fight etches closer, their training intensity goes on the rise with montages coming up on social media. But the fight fans were split into two factions with one such training montage.

The rivalry between Adesanya and Du Plessis indeed requires a conclusion and UFC 305 gave the platform for it. The heat between the fighters kept on rising with their cold war at the recent press conference. Responding to ‘Stillknocks’, the Kiwi fighter said, “I don’t give a f*** where he’s from. But I’ll show him who he is.” But he didn’t back off from sending out a training video to intimidate his opponent.

Recently, ‘The Last Stylebender’ released a minute-long video of his sparring session on X. Therein, the mixed martial artist can be seen donning protective gear and sparring with his teammates. The visual involved everything. Striking, grappling, takedowns, you name it! But as the visual showed Adesanya throwing knees and getting taken down, the fight fans proceeded to the comments section.

Fight fans split into factions as Israel Adesanya trains to fight Dricus Du Plessis

Not too long ago, Du Plessis made a comment that Adesanya planned on taking retirement following his biggest achievement of defeating Alex Pereira. A few fans chimed in with Du Plessis and believed that ‘The Last Stylebender’ should retire.

As the video progressed, predictions for the bout began coming in. Some of the fans believed that Adesanya would be the one to face defeat. One fan claimed that Izzy would get knocked out.

Some of the fans also pointed out that Adesanya’s grappling game needed a bit of work. One fan commented that if his grappling was on the same level as that of Anderson Silva, Du Plessis’ defeat would have been imminent.

While some fans were disappointed with the video saying, “all that for leg kicking and running for 25 min,” many others stood in support of the former champ. In the video, there was a moment where Adesanya defended himself from a takedown by putting his knee out front. Needless to say, the fans took notice. “ISRAEL BY FLYING KNEE KO 2ND ROUND,” one of the fans predicted.
