Dricus Du Plessis just backed up Sean Strickland‘s earlier claim. In one way or another, Du Plessis agreed with Strickland that Khamzat Chimaev would probably not last against the middleweight champ. So, is Dana White keen on giving ‘Borz’ a shot at the title?

Even before Chimaev fought Kamaru Usman at UFC 294, White was already hinting at a middleweight transition for the fighter. Now that Chimaev has won, a title shot may just be waiting for him. After the 294 bout, White confirmed that the winner of the two will get a shot but for Strickland, both the fighters weren’t worth it. Now, Du Plessis has weighed in on the matter.

Khamzat Chimaev defeated Kamaru Usman via majority decision at UFC 294. This came to be after Usman had to step in since Paulo Costa pulled out due to an elbow injury. Usman stepped in at short notice and still put up a great performance lasting all three rounds against a very aggressive ‘Borz’.

Since both the fighters fought at middleweight, talks about a title shot soon poured in. And with it, everyone’s opinion on whether Chimaev deserved it or not. First, Strickland accused him of not “earning” it. And now, it’s Du Plessis’ turn.

“I’m not going to beg for any title shot,” Du Plessis said in a recent conversation about getting the title shot. “I’ve never begged for anything. I’ve fought for it . . . if you want to give Khamzat the title shot go right ahead. Because the Khamzat that fought (at UFC 294) loses to Sean Strickland every day of the week.”

Clearly, Du Plessis is in no hurry to get himself a shot at Strickland’s title. But is it any fair that Chimaev gets it before him? Perhaps the spectacle of a match helped the Chechen land an earlier title shot but so far, no other matches have been confirmed. And if Sean Strickland is to be believed, Chimaev shouldn’t get a chance at all.

Sean Strickland’s thoughts about Chimaev

Strickland recently appeared on UFC Fight Pass and opened up about a bunch of things. This was right after UFC 294 and Strickland had a lot to say about Chimaev’s win against Usman. ‘Tarzan’ didn’t feel like Chimaev’s win over ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ was worth it.

“He doesn’t fu*king deserve it. Getting a decision with a welterweight off the couch is not fu*king earning it.”  Strickland had said about Chimaev. The welterweight fighter later issued a warning to Strickland promising to “finish” him quickly when they meet. So will the two lock horns anytime soon? It looks like it’ll be a while until we find out.
