Don’t ever let Joe Rogan hear you disrespect martial arts. That’s the mistake Hollywood icon Meryl Streep made. Rogan disagreed with her infamous take on MMA during a recent episode of his podcast and explained his own view on the subject. Joe Rogan has been a martial artist for the majority of his life. A black belt in both Jiu Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do, the 55-year-old, has also been with the UFC for over two decades. Therefore, Rogan has a deep understanding and reverence for the sport of MMA.
In a recent episode of the JRE MMA Show, Rogan hosted #3 ranked UFC bantamweight Cory Sandhagen. During their chat, the pair discussed the primal nature of MMA and how it is an art form when performed at the highest level. In this context, Rogan recollected a crude comment that the renowned actress Meryl Streep once made about MMA.

Rogan holds martial arts in the highest regard. It has become an integral part of his life and he preaches it to his listeners quite often. Therefore, he was not about to let Streep get away with her comments on MMA.
On episode #138 of the JRE MMA Show, Rogan told Sandhagen, “There was a famous thing where… Who was that actress that said… You know, she’s talking about the arts and said, “Not mixed martial arts.” Who was that?… Merryl Streep. Great actress, but she doesn’t know. It’s ok. She’s got some silly idea that she thinks that acting is the end all be all and that’s the arts. Okay.”
He continued, “Martial art is a f***ig art. When I watched your performance versus Marlon, that was artistic to me. I was like, “Goddamn that’s beautiful.”
Rogan was referring to Sandhagen’s recent win over Marlon Vera via a split decision. Interestingly, Rogan was not the only one to condemn Streep’s comments. UFC President Dana White also criticized Streep for her insensitive take on MMA.

As reported by BBC, in his response, White said, “Of course [MMA] is an art.” He continued, “These fighters, these men and women, are so talented. They train their whole lives to be the best in the world. To say something stupid like that is like saying, ‘She’s not a talented actress,’ which she is. She’s a very talented actress.”
The UFC head honcho also added that he did not expect “an uppity 80-year-old lady to be in our demographic and love mixed martial arts.”
What do you think of Streep’s comments? Do you agree with her statements or the responses from Rogan and White?
