A lot of fans had assumed that Derrick Lewis would get the better of Serghei Spivac in their clash at the UFC Vegas 68. But the 4 February event ended with disappointment for them. The 28-year-old Moldovan, Spivac, put out a display of utter domination in the fight finishing off his rival in the opening stanza. While most fans might know that Lewis is one of the most feared KO artists in the entire UFC, Spivac nullified his prowess in the fight without much effort. The Moldovan didn’t allow ‘The Black Beast’ to gain even a single point on him. The fight stats displayed zeroes for Lewis in every department.

In the post-fight interview with the famed Michael Bisping, Serghei Spivac called out the current UFC Heavyweight king Jon Jones. But he didn’t use his real name to address himself. Right at the beginning of it, Spivac alerted the UFC’s Heavyweight division, calling himself by his nickname. However, looking at his UFC joining in 2019 and his current rank of #7, it may be said that Spivac isn’t a pretty hyped figure among the UFC community. Hence, a lot of fans might not know about the unique nickname that he used before calling out the UFC Heavyweight king, Jon Jones.

Although there are fans who are aware of the Moldovan’s nickname, most are probably trying to recollect his UFC Vegas 68 interview currently. Well, some fans might have also recollected by this time that Serghei Spivac goes by the moniker of ‘The Polar Bear’ in the UFC. But, despite his unique callout, Spivac didn’t get his targeted opponent. Still, fans expect him to present a tough challenge to Jon Jones’ previous rival, Ciryl Gane, when they meet on 2 September, 2023 at UFC Paris.

There are many UFC fighters who go by animal names as their monikers. But Spivac’s nickname stands out from the panthers and gorillas that fighters often choose. Fans might also agree that the nickname of a fighter often has a lot to do with his overall appearance and fighting style. This is why a lot of them love the nickname of the famed UFC Middleweight, Jared Cannonier, who calls himself ‘The Killa Gorilla’. Several fans might have the same opinion about Spivac’s nickname as well.

What is the meaning behind Serghei Spivac’s nickname?

Most fans might know that the noted former UFC Interim Featherweight champ, Yair Rodriguez, goes by the nickname of ‘El Pantera’ which if translated to English means ‘The Panther’. His nickname gives a good representation of his fighting style which comprises sudden attacks and strikes with unpredictable agility much like a panther. Spivac’s nickname of ‘The Polar Bear’ also might have a similar reason to it.

As we all know, polar bears are big animals and usually have a pretty thick layer of fat on their bodies that helps them survive in the extreme cold of the Arctic. A lot of fans might view Spivac’s huge and slightly obese physique as comparable to a well-nourished polar bear. Some of them also might see his incredibly fair skin as another point of similarity with the white coat of a polar bear. Even if they don’t find any such match, ‘The Polar Bear’ has proved multiple times that he absolutely loves calling himself by his moniker.

However, the UFC’s official website gave out another reason behind the Moldovan choosing this moniker for himself. It revealed that Spivac trains at the ‘Polar Bear Team’ facility. Several fans also might take this as the reason behind the 28-year-old’s unique moniker.

Serghei Spivac’s polar bear tattoo

Spivac’s love for his nickname knows no bounds. While fighters often root for making their names famous, Spivac works more towards getting known by his nickname. His pre-UFC Paris press conference also stands as proof of this fact. Replying to one of the reporters’ questions through his translator, Spivac said, “I don’t look at myself as a horse. I look at myself as a polar bear”.

Most of his fans might have witnessed another very noticeable sign that reveals the same. It is the large polar bear tattoo that covers the right side of his chest entirely. This inkwork also extends to the outer side of his right bicep. Although the parts of the tattoo on the right arm of Spivac signify something else, the Polar bear appears on the center of the right side of his chest making it the most noticeable element of the tattoo.

A large chunk of fans would probably agree that the bear in the tattoo looks like it’s looking directly into the eye of the one standing in front of Spivac. They also might opine that it looks pretty attractive.
