Charles Oliveira and his withdrawal from UFC 294 came as a shock to the fans. Oliveira, who was set to face Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title, had to step away from the bout. It was revealed that ‘Do Bronx’ had suffered a serious cut above his eye during training camp. This led to Alexander Volkanovski stepping up on short notice to replace him. However, it seems Oliveira has got his sights on something bigger than the belt!

Charles Oliveira and Makhachev faced off at UFC 280 after Oliveira lost his belt due to a weight miss against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274. The vacant title was up for grabs and Oliveira was aiming to reclaim his championship against the Dagestani fighter. However, he came up short as Makhachev clipped him on the feet and swiftly wrapped up a submission in the second round. This led to Makhachev claiming the UFC lightweight title.

But Oliveira might be interested in a different matchup in the future. As he stated in an interview with MMAFighting, “Charles Oliveira against Conor McGregor, money fight.” He explained that it was a fight that would have a lot of eyes on it. And he also claimed that the only one who doesn’t want this fight is McGregor.

Oliveira further explained, “…I’ve said it a thousand times — 170, 185, 155, I don’t know, choose the weight. Say where and I’ll be there. Just send the contract and we’ll sign it. That’s the fight.”  He also stated that he is waiting for the UFC to call and will be available for the fight no matter the location.

With Oliveira out of UFC 294, Dana White has stated to the press that if Oliveira wishes, he will get a shot at the winner of Volkanovski vs. Makhachev. In a statement after the UFC 294 ceremonial weigh-ins, White stated, “I have no idea what we’re gonna do with Charles until – but obviously, if I have to answer that question, I’d say yeah (he gets the winner).”

It remains to be seen whether the proposed matchup does take place. But with UFC 294 almost upon us, Oliveira has made an interesting observation about Makhachev vs Volkanovski!

Oliveira reveals his pick for UFC 294 ‘champ vs champ’ matchup

UFC 294 has seen not one but two replacements take place in a short span! Khamzat Chimaev’s original opponent, Paulo Costa, was removed due to complications from an arm infection. Charles Oliveira couldn’t face Islam Makhachev because of issues with the cut above his eye.

Now, with Alexander Volkanovski ready to take his place on just 11 days’ notice, Oliveira reveals how he feels about the fight. During the interview with MMAFighting, Oliveira also discussed his thoughts on the champ vs. champ rematch.
