Alex Pereira wants to be the UFC’s first three-division champion. The reigning light heavyweight champion has called for a heavyweight title bout to go with his 205-pound title and the previously held 185-pound title. But Dana White has been reluctant. ‘Poatan’s callout, of course, has been accepted by both, undisputed heavyweight champ Jon Jones and interim champ Tom Aspinall. Not to mention the UFC world is almost unanimously on board with the idea. This is why UFC analyst and former fighter thinks all roads lead to an Aspinall-Pereira bout.
Tom Aspinall is coming off a fantastic first-round KO victory over Curtis ‘Razor’ Blaydes at UFC 304 just last month. Now the interim champ is in line to fight the winner of the upcoming Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic bout. Unless, of course, the winner of that bout retires after the fight, as is widely expected.
Chael Sonnen pointed out that it means Aspinall is virtually left without an opponent at the moment. And who better to face next than Alex Pereira, who has already expressed an interest in fighting the Englishman? Not to mention the fight has the sanctioning of Joe Rogan, who, according to Dana White, has been badgering him to make it happen.

“The timing of Tom Aspinall being free. Tom Aspinall having no opponent ‘cuz he got through Curtis Blaydes. Which happens to be 10 days removed from Joe Rogan, one of the biggest voice in sport, not just this one saying that he is supporting the idea of Pereira versus Aspinall,” Sonnen said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
Of course, this would also lead to Pereira being the first man in the promotion’s history to fight for a third UFC title, something Sonnen thinks will not happen again, at least in the foreseeable future. “We know Aspinall will do it, he already tried at 300. We know Pereira will do it he has a chance to set history which is not likely to be broken in our lifetimes. Champ champ champ is not likely to ever happen to any of us again,” he added.

Recent reports have indeed suggested that Dana White is no longer opposed to the idea and may indeed be looking to make the Aspinall-Pereira bout happen if his Plan A fails.
UFC reportedly looking to book Pereira-Adesanya after UFC 305
According to MMA reporter Reuben Carter, the UFC has some big plans for Pereira’s next fight. Israel Adesanya will face middleweight champ Dricus Du Plessis in a grudge match on UFC 305 a week from now. If ‘Izzy’ manages to recapture the 185-pound title there, Dana White and co. will book him opposite Pereira for a trilogy bout.

Adesanya and Pereira, of course, have a long and storied rivalry stretching back to their kickboxing days. In their two UFC clashes, both men have won one fight apiece, with the whole UFC world eager to see them finish their unfinished business. On the other hand, if Adesanya doesn’t become champ, the UFC will have ‘Poatan’ face Aspinall sometime next year for the heavyweight title.
Either way, one thing could be certain- Alex Pereira’s next fight will not be at light heavyweight if what Carter has reported turns out to be true. Who do you think Alex Pereira should fight next? Let us know your pick in the comments below.
