Joe Rogan on how Chris Rock changed after the Will Smith slap
During their conversation, Joe Rogan and Rick Rubin gave Chris Rock props for being a great stand-up comedian. Rogan explained Rock’s creative process and commented on his work ethic. “He was an artist, but he was also like, he was a craftsman,” Rogan said of Chris Rock.
Rubin said that he saw Chris Rock’s show at the O2 Arena in London a few weeks back and that it was “unbelievable.” Rubin called it the funniest he’d ever seen Rock. Commenting on Chris Rock’s recent run of form, Rogan said, “He’s on fire right now. Will Smith, slapping him, I think, woke up… I mean, I haven’t talked to him about this.”
Rogan said he thought that watching people applaud Will Smith for his Oscar win, moments after Smith slapped him, may have motivated Chris Rock.
“He [Smith] goes on to win the award that night, goes on stage and they applaud him after he just assaulted one of the greatest comedians that’s ever lived over the most innocuous roast joke… And I think him seeing that just fired up that ‘f*ck you’ furnace.”
Rubin responded by adding that Chris Rock’s performance with Dave Chappelle was truly incredible.

Joe Rogan did not take kindly to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. He made that abundantly clear during his conversation with Rick Rubin. Rogan also ripped Hollywood for not standing up for Chris Rock and applauding Smith at the awards after what transpired.
“… those people, those Hollywood people, are f*cking crazy. They’re all in this weird, bizarre cult of actors and Oscars and parties and applause and this very bizarre, disconnected world.”
Rogan thought that Smith’s violent reaction to a harmless joke was uncalled for. He added that this incident tarnished Will Smith’s image as a family man and a movie star.
