Is Conor McGregor biting off more than he can chew with Canelo Alvarez?

Boxing sensation Canelo Álvarez sent shockwaves through the combat sports community during an interview with iFL TV, where he hinted at his desire to follow in Floyd Mayweather’s footsteps by fighting UFC’s former dual champion Conor McGregor. He said, “It’s not something I want for my legacy, but if it’s for a lot of money [then] why not?” This statement quickly grabbed the attention of fighters and analysts, who couldn’t resist reacting.

One of the notable voices is Conor McGregor’s fan-turned-rival, Sean O’Malley, who is currently preparing to defend his bantamweight title against Merab Dvalishvili. When ‘Suga’ heard about the potential Canelo Alvarez-McGregor boxing match, ‘Suga’ shared his opinion in a recent interview.

Sean O’Malley has been focused on his upcoming fight at the sphere, which is considered to be the UFC’s most expensive event ever. His dedication to this fight was evident when he recently appeared on the Full Send Podcast on YouTube to promote it. He was taken aback when the host asked him, “Did you see Canelo say he wants to fight McGregor?” Excited by the news, ‘Suga’ asked, “In a fight or boxing?” The host replied, “Boxing.” Wasting no time, Sean O’Malley dropped his verdict on the highly anticipated boxing match.

O’Malley said, ” God, due, Conor would get killed. Canelo, due, Canelo’s scary. Like, I would be scared for my life if  I had to go box Canelo like that.” Oddly, Sean O’Malley seems unaware of the Alvarez-McGregor news, especially considering his recent verbal altercation with ‘Notorious’. This conflict arose after ‘Suga’ criticized Ryan Garcis’s PED use, which angered McGregor, as he considers Garcia a friend.

However, after receiving a sharp reply from McGregor, Sean O’Malley didn’t let his morale drop. In the past, he had been nothing but humble when it came to dealing with Conor McGregor, but those days are over. ‘Suga’ now sees himself as the new face of the UFC, a sentiment previously echoed by MMA personalities like Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier.

Conor McGregor has been absent from the octagon for a long time, which is diminishing the status he built as a household name worldwide. Known for his trash-talking persona, McGregor set himself apart from the other fighters. As ‘Notorious’ eyes a return to the Octagon, Sean O’Malley is also focusing on ‘Notorious’ future, as it could impact ‘Suga’s own trajectory.

In a recent UFC 306 pre-fight interview, Sean O’Malley revealed that he is just inches away from surpassing the two-division champion’s legacy. O’Malley said, “I think I’m very close. I think Conor [McGregor] still got one more big fight in him cause there’s a big question mark like, can Conor come back? Can he actually beat [Michael] Chandler?… If he goes out there and loses his next fight…Like, it’s gotta die down eventually. Maybe not. That just tests how big of a star he is, but I would assume he goes out there, if he loses, I’m there. I’m the guy. I’m the number one.”
