Can Sean O'Malley really eclipse McGregor and Jones, or is he just another hype train?

UFC 306 is just around the corner, and it’s shaping up to be an event of epic proportions, just as promised by the UFC’s head honcho. If you weren’t already buzzing, it’s happening at The Sphere in Las Vegas—a jaw-dropping venue that’s sure to elevate the spectacle. And as if that weren’t enough, the main card features none other than the electrifying “Suga” Sean O’Malley squaring off against the relentless Merab Dvalishvili. The countdown has fans on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting what could be one of the most explosive nights in recent UFC history.

Ask any fighter, and they’ll tell you—avenging a loss is one of the ultimate goals in this brutal sport. Just look at one of the GOATs, Georges St-Pierre. He only lost twice in his illustrious 28-fight career and managed to come back both times with a vengeance, solidifying his legacy.

So, what’s O’Malley’s endgame? For a long time, “Suga” seemed unfazed by the idea of chasing redemption, brushing off the pressure with his trademark nonchalance. But now, the Montana-born, heavily tattooed knockout artist appears to have sharpened his focus. As he prepares to clash with Dvalishvili, it seems O’Malley’s attitude has shifted, and he’s eyeing bigger things—perhaps even the kind of legacy-building triumphs that could cement him as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

With UFC 306 promising fireworks in and out of the Octagon, O’Malley’s journey toward that elusive greatness starts now. Buckle up, because this event is going to be one for the history books.

What is Sean O’Malley’s end goal?

Sean O’Malley is again in the limelight because he is the main attraction at Las Vegas Sphere’s once-in-a-lifetime event at UFC 306. He lost to Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC 252 but redeemed himself at UFC 299. Dvalishvili witnessed the whole ordeal live and even heard ‘Suga’ calling him out for the next fight. So clearly, the bantamweight champion already has his goals in place. He finally revealed his end goal during the UFC 306 countdown episode and, it is to become the greatest. At least that is what O’Malley is hoping for as he is stirring up the pot of the brewing rivalry with his opponent.

The champion confidently answered, “It comes down to who is doing massive numbers, and who is doing big business for the UFC. And I do think I am that guy. I remember when Mcgregor started to headline cards and sell out arenas it was the same thing. it’s what I wanted when I was coming up in the sport. I wanted to do big things. I still feel like I am not really at the end goal.  My end goal is to become the biggest combat sports athlete in history.” It is not astonishing that he took the name of ‘Mystic Mac’ since, once upon a time McGregor was his idol before the whole PED scandal. Unfortunately, the fighter he revered so much had dragged him into the PED controversy during Ryan Garcia’s suspension. This had soured things for ‘Sugar.’

As for the recent fight, even if his end goal is to become the biggest at UFC it won’t be an easy task. The Georgian contender is on a 10-fight winning streak with a record of 17-4 making him an amazing opponent for 18-1-1 O’Malley. However, the bantamweight fighter is quite confident and he previously stated that he would end the fight with a victory. He is so prepared that he even warned his opponent through Instagram.

Sean O’Malley means business and he is confident about his win

He uploaded a video of himself casually sitting on the sofa and talking on his phone while practicing his strikes. ‘Sugar’ also dropped a huge update for his opponent in the captions of the post. He mentioned casually that he was cooking up a storm during his training by scoring takedowns and also practicing his reflexes by scoring 32 kills. He wrote, “Merab is absolutely in trouble. I’m so dialed in. Dropped 32 kills in resurgence the other day. Scored a TD with @k1. Talk to Uncle Chael about YouTube while hitting mits with the greatest mind in MMA @timwelchmt. 11 days out.”

However, there is a saying by Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu that reads, “’There is no greater danger than underestimating your opponent.” Maybe this would be a good point for O’Malley to remember because the Georgian contender is also preparing in full force. Dvalishvili is resorting to psychological games of his own against ‘Sugar.’ While the bantamweight champion thinks that his opponent is getting the prefight jitters, Dvalishvili was surprisingly spotted at a Mexican bar drinking alcohol and having fun.

No matter who wins, one thing is for sure the fans are expecting a high-intensity fight. This fight surely is going to be theatrical and electrifying. How do you think this fight is going to end? Are you excited to see it unfold next week?
