Sean O’Malley’s callout of Ilia Topuria at the UFC 299 post-fight press conference didn’t seem to have gone as well as he had planned. Not only were fans giving him a hard time for not fighting the no. 1 ranked bantamweight contender in Merab Dvalishvili, but his callout also seemed to have gotten the attention of a retired UFC Legend.
UFC Legend, Chael Sonnen’s YouTube channel is a place where quite a lot of figh fans go to get some “insights” on what’s going on in the fight game. Just as expected, “The Bad Guy” had his take on O’Malley’s callout of the featherweight champion. Here is what the 46-year-old had to say about the whole situation.

Chael Sonnen, just like most fight fans, didn’t really seem to like to like the idea of entertaining a fight between Sean O’Malley and Ilia Topuria. During a recent video posted on his channel, he stated, “Sean and Topuria, I’m very comfortable in telling you, has no chance of being next for Ilia Topuria and Sean O’Malley.”
There are quite a lot of reasons for Sonnen not entertaining the callout from Sean O’Malley to Ilia Topuria. One Major reason is all the formalities it would take for the fight to actually take form. In his YouTube video, he said, “There’s not a time throughout history where you can go champion versus champion without a whole bunch of work done. And a whole bunch of questions answered by both people.”
However, the UFC Legend does seem to understand the fight will undoubtedly be massive if done correctly and before any interruptions. However, given all the chess pieces moving on the boards of the UFC’s Featherweight and Bantamweight divisions, he seems to believe that there might be better pieces to move. Most fans seem to believe that O’Malley calling out Topuria was a route for him to duck “The Machine”. Though Sonnen didn’t really give an analysis on how a fight between O’Malley and Dvalishvili would’ve gone, a former world champion seems to believe that it would be a matchup favoring “Suga”.

Robert Whittaker favors Sean O’Malley over Merab Dvalishvili in a matchup
Unlike the majority of the people who seem to believe that Merab Dvalishvili would be a hard matchup for Sean O’Malley, the former UFC middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker seems to think otherwise. Whittaker, after seeing O’Malley’s fight against Marlon Vera and Aljamain Sterling, seems to believe that stylistically, “Suga” has the upper hand.
During a podcast episode of MMArcade podcast, “The Reaper” stated, “I think Merab and Sean are a bad matchup. I think Sean’s spacing and just his creativity. Not to mention, Sean has the entire skillset, the entire arsenal.”
