Is Jon Jones prioritizing his health over legacy by choosing Miocic over Aspinall for his last fight?

Jon Jones, the undisputed heavyweight champion, is gearing up for what could be his last Octagon appearance. Set to face Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, ‘Bones’ has hinted that retirement may be on the cards after this fight. But that isn’t the only bombshell he’s dropped recently. Jones has also opened up about the silent dangers of concussions, a sad cost that many combat sports athletes have to pay.

But Jones isn’t just sitting back; he’s taking charge of his health. His solution? The undisputed heavyweight king has taken a page out of Dana White’s health playbook, specifically from Gary Brecka, the UFC boss’s go-to medical expert!

While the MMA Sphere is waiting for UFC 309, Jon Jones recently confessed to facing a different kind of battle. It may not be one that you can see on fight night, but it’s just as fierce. In a recent video shared on social media, Jones stated to his training partners, “Throughout my whole twenties, going home with a headache all the time from concussions, and now when that happens I get really upset and feel like I did something wrong, so really try and protect that brain, man”

Jones didn’t stop at personal reflection. He recalled teammates who, early in their careers, were untouchable. But as time went on, they couldn’t dodge even the simplest of punches. “Your ability for your brain to process and react quickly goes away the more you get hit.” he further shared, emphasizing the importance of avoiding unnecessary damage.

But how do you make sure your body recovers from the damage sparring and training takes on a fighter’s body? In a recent post on his Instagram story, Jones shared a video of himself in a cold-plunge tank, trying to ensure his body’s recovery and tagged ‘10XHealth System’, Gary Brecka’s company in the post as well.

For those unaware, UFC boss Dana White shocked the world with his remarkable physical transformation in 2022. The man behind it was Gary Brecka. White had stated, “This guy is incredible, and he can literally change your life. I feel like I’m 35 years old again. Swear to God, I feel like I’m 35 again.”

As such, Brecka’s approach has also caught the attention of fighters like Jones, who see the long-term benefits in keeping their brains—and bodies—in peak condition. But with UFC 309 looming and ‘Bones’ indicating that this might be the end of the line, he’s found a surprising ally to defend him against claims of ‘ducking’ the interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall!

‘The Predator’ comes to Jones and Aspinall’s defense amidst unification bout uproar

With Tom Aspinall now holding the interim heavyweight title, many fans expected Jon Jones to face the Englishman in a unification bout. Instead, the undisputed champion has reportedly opted to close his career with a legacy fight against Stipe Miocic. But in the midst of the fan uproar regarding this decision, Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight kingpin, has come to Jones’s defense!

In a recent conversation with ‘SHAK MMA’, ‘The Predator’ stated, “It’s a situation that is stuck in the corner for everyone. Who is obligated to have a fight that he wants, the champ or the interim champ? As such, Ngannou noted that both Jones and Aspinall are doing what they think is right. But in his eyes, it’s the UFC that should shoulder the blame for this confusion. He further stated, “If I’m Jon, I want to do the fight ( with Miocic). Basically, my fight in November was canceled against Stipe and maybe that’s my retirement fight.”

The former champion has made an interesting point. After all, the UFC introduced the interim belt following Jones’s injury, putting Aspinall in an odd spot. And now, both Aspinall and Jones are left dealing with the consequences. But with the heavyweight division in flux, it raises questions like, will Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall finally give the fans the unification bout or will the heavyweight division remain stuck in this tangled web of legacy fights and interim titles?
