Ryan Jamari Spann was born on August 24, 1991, in Memphis, Tennessee. The American stands at an intimidating 6 ft. 5 inches tall with a 79-inch reach, which makes fighting him a dangerous prospect for any opponent.

Spann’s road to the UFC wasn’t a straight shot to glory—it was a winding path filled with both setbacks and triumphs. He began his journey as a professional mixed martial artist in 2013 after going 3-1 as an amateur. The next stop in his path? Legacy Fighting Championship and Legacy Fighting Alliance. The signs of greatness were all there as he became the organization’s light-heavyweight champion with a record of 13-5.

Next up? A shot at the UFC on Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) 3 in 2017. But sadly, he faced heartbreak as he lost the fight against Karl Roberson due to a first-round knockout. How would most people respond to that kind of crushing defeat? Would they walk away? Not Spann. Rather than letting the loss break him, it ignited something deeper. He wasn’t ready to close the book on his UFC dreams. Failure was just a plot twist, not the final chapter.

All we know about Ryan Spann’s parents and early life

What makes Ryan Spann truly unique isn’t just his fighting style or his height—it’s his nickname. ‘Superman’ might sound familiar, but there’s a deeper story behind it. The nickname originally belonged to his father. Growing up in Westwood, Tennessee, Spann’s dad was the protector of his neighborhood, earning the title ‘Superman’ for his role in keeping bullies at bay. Naturally, young Ryan was dubbed ‘Superkid,’ a nod to his father’s legacy.

But that all changed at 17 as in his interview with UFC.com Spann revealed, “Naturally, when I hit 17, I was like, ‘All right, I’m done with this kid thing; I’m a man now,’ so ‘Superman.’” Now, fighting in the UFC, ‘Superman’ is fighting not just for his dreams, but to provide a better life for his family.

Spann is married and is the proud parent of 3 children with his wife. While he prefers to keep his wife’s name out of the spotlight, and there isn’t a lot of information available about her online, he has often credited her for his success. In an interview with Kevin Iole, he shared, “She understands what I have to do. When I have to take a step back to focus on fighting, she does a lot of the work. That’s why I fight harder, because I’m trying to make her life as easy as possible.”

Now, ‘Superman’ will be taking on Ovince Saint Preux at UFC 307 and one thing is clear, Spann’s story is far from over. With his family’s support and a relentless pursuit of greatness, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the light-heavyweight contender.
