Jared Cannonier has broken the losing streak with an emphatic knockout win over Gregory Rodrigues at UFC Vegas 102. So what now? Well, the former middleweight title contender has his eyes on an opponent above him in the rankings, and to be more precise, ‘The Killa Gorilla’ wants to take on former champion Robert Whittaker.

Jared Cannonier has a lot of opponents in mind for his next fight but doesn’t see that materializing. “[He would love to fight] the next guy above me [to] whoever’s above me. But, to be honest, the chances are… me getting one of those matchups, it’s kind of hard,” the 40-year-old stated in the post-fight show on ESPN. As such, Cannonier is looking for a rematch against Caio Borralho but seems more in favor of having the rematch against Robert Whittaker because he believes that the UFC may not have any issues with setting this fight up.

“Maybe a Robert Whittaker matchup. You know, Caio Borralho that I just fought,” Jared Cannonier added. “I think the Robert Whittaker one would be, as far as guys ahead of me, would be more likely to happen… a matchup that the UFC would make. Being realistic with myself.”

Well, Robert Whittaker may take some time before making his return inside the Octagon, given that he broke his jaw in his last fight against Khamzat Chimaev. But he could make an early return as per his recent update, where he also mentioned when he thinks would be fitting to make a comeback. Here’s what the former middleweight champion had to say.

Robert Whittaker is aiming for a return in June

Robert Whittaker claims that he never had any issues with the jaw, although it seems like he had one in the aftermath of UFC 308. Hence, his recovery process seems to have ended, but what he’s doing now is making some adjustments in his fighting approach. In fact, while there were discussions about a possible injury, the former champion was able to return to training rather quickly. With that said, Whittaker recently claimed that he was gunning for a return around International Fight Week.

“Yeah, the jaw was fine. There was never a jaw problem. It was a teeth problem and I was fortunate enough. UFC hooked me up with a great surgeon… I was back at training quite quickly. I’ve been training for a while now. I was training obviously. I’ve been training here with the boys a little bit but honestly,” Robert Whittaker stated on ‘FOX Sports’s ‘Main Event’ show. “I’m working on some new skillset. I’ve got some new things that I’m working on at the beginning of this year you know. In the coming months, I want to focus on those and I’m probably looking for a June return you know. I want to hit the ground running perfect… when I step back in the octagon again after a loss you see me level up.”

Well, it might seem logical for some fans to see Robert Whittaker take on Jared Cannonier as ‘The Killa Gorilla’ would seek to redeem himself. But what do you think? Does that fight make you interested? Let us know in the comments down below.
