The UFC 296 press conference was highly anticipated by the fans who were wondering what antics Colby Covington would display this time! However, no one could have predicted the interaction between him and Tony Ferguson would go the way it did. Ferguson will be taking on Paddy Pimblett in a lightweight clash between the veteran and the rising star from the UK. The press conference at UFC 296 was marked by Colby Covington’s appearance in an America-themed costume. ‘Chaos’ was up to his usual tricks as he managed to get under Leon Edward’s skin with distasteful comments about his father that led to a heated moment between the two men.
And the same would occur when Covington and Ferguson began exchanging words. Covington inquired, “Bro, you might still be knocked out when you got kicked by Michael Chandler dude.” However, Ferguson unexpectedly responded by saying, “I might be, but I woke up and realized how American I am man…regardless of if this f*ker wins or I win, we’re going to keep that f*king sh*t here.”
The comments underscored Ferguson and Covington’s patriotism which led to both men finding a reason to support one another! As Covington acknowledged Ferguson’s statement, ‘El Cucuy’ responded by saying, “That was a compliment, b*tch.”
Instead of another jab, Covington surprisingly responded with a show of respect by stating, “Yeah, I’m complimenting you too, I’m rooting for you Saturday night”. This led to both men seemingly teaming up together as “Team America” as Covington loudly exclaimed, “Let’s go Team America”! A sentiment that was echoed immediately by Ferguson who yelled, “F*ck yeah, America motherf*ckers”
This interaction highlighted that even the smallest of things can lead to seemingly opposite personalities coming together in the UFC. It remains to be seen if Ferguson will be able to snap his extended losing streak against Pimblett. Still, he remains supremely confident and recently, even had a bold take on former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov!
‘El Cucuy’ thinks ‘The Eagle’ is scared of him
Tony Ferguson, despite a tough losing streak, remains unwaveringly confident. In MMA history, no match-up is as cursed as Ferguson’s failed bouts with former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Scheduled to clash five times, each bout collapsed for various reasons, leading Ferguson to face Justin Gaethje in May 2020 at UFC 249.
“Ferguson” faced defeat via a fifth-round technical knockout, triggering a six-fight losing streak that has seen the once feared “Boogeyman” of the division look lost inside the Octagon. Yet, Ferguson’s belief that he could have beaten Nurmagomedov remains steady.

In an interview with ESPN, Ferguson stated, “He’s still my b*ch, I scared the f*k out of that Dagestani guy. Nothing against anybody else in the country. Just met a dude over here today, took a picture, but I scared the death out of him. ”
As he navigates through a challenging phase in his career, Ferguson’s resilience and unyielding self-belief continue to define his presence in the highly competitive world of MMA.
