Born on October 26, 1984, in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Rafael dos Anjos grew up in a country where the notion of race and ethnicity is fluid. While there are no official records detailing his specific ethnic makeup, dos Anjos, like many Brazilians, likely has a mixture of European, African, and possibly indigenous ancestry. Dos Anjos’ Portuguese surname offers a clue to his European heritage, as Portuguese settlers and colonists left a lasting legacy in Brazil. The influence of this culture is still evident in the country’s language, traditions, and names.

However, being a native of Brazil, where many families have diverse backgrounds, it is likely that dos Anjos also carries elements of African ancestry, a result of Brazil’s historical involvement in the Atlantic slave trade. While dos Anjos may not speak extensively about his ethnic background in public, his identity as a Brazilian is deeply rooted in the nation’s multicultural fabric.
