Dana White recently reinstated the BMF title with Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje set to battle for the belt at UFC 291. Meanwhile, the first BMF champion, Jorge Masvidal, gave his take on the revival of the title in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on ‘The MMA Hour’.
Jorge Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 244 to become the inaugural BMF champion. However, following that bout, the belt was later suspended for a few years before the promotion decided to revive it for UFC 291. Let us take a look at what ‘Gamebred’ had to say about that.

The former UFC fighter appears to be happy with the fact that the BMF title is back. He also claims that this belt represents the fighters who are willing to put everything on the line to win it. Masvidal said, “I love it. Keep it alive and pick the right fighters to do it that are gonna f***ing give their life.” Furthermore, he recalled his fight against Nate Diaz and mentioned how they were both ready to face fatal consequences to win the championship. Fortunately, the referee intervened to stop the fight.
“The first BMF fight would like to see what it should be about – guys trying to kill each other no matter what’s pushing forward through because if the referee doesn’t stop that I literally would have to kill Nate Diaz because he was gonna keep coming,” said Masvidal.
Fighters who place heavy emphasis on delivering an electrifying spectacle to their fans are meant to wear this unique belt, which symbolizes toughness, according to Masvidal. He added, “You’ve got to go for it all [and] you’ve got to put on a show for these motherf***ers around the world live.”
‘Gamebred’ is rooting for Dustin Poirier to win
Jorge Masvidal is content with the UFC’s choice of fighters to compete for the title. However, he is tempted to lean towards Dustin Poirier, given that ‘The Diamond’ dominated Justin Gaethje when they fought last time. The former UFC fighter said, “I think they picked the right two candidates to do that. Obviously, I am leaning heavily toward Dustin just because he whooped his a** the first time and mopped him up.”
Furthermore, Masvidal claims that Dustin Poirier keeps getting better as a fighter. He believes this time, the result won’t be much different from the first time Poirier met ‘The Highlight’. ‘Gamebred’ said, “I think the second time he’s gonna do even better and cleaner, and Dustin’s just good, bro. He keeps getting better.”

Masvidal mentioned that he approached Dana White to be the one who puts the belt around the winner. He believes it makes sense because he was the first champion to ever hold it. “That’s what I said, ‘Dana, let me go over there and put the belt on Dustin’s [or Gaethje’s] waist.'”
While it is still unsure about the implication of winning the belt, some fans argue that the BMF champion may get a divisional title shot. However, we are yet to find out what the UFC plans to do with the winner.
