The first fight between the two top dogs at bantamweight ended controversially. However, the second fight between Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan was completely different.

The co-main event of UFC 273 saw a rather slow start, but the reigning champion put on the pressure in the second round and dominated Yan. One thing was quite clear: this was a different fight, and the outcome would not follow the previous bout.

Sterling was not the one to let the second fight get out of his hands. He may have been overwhelmed with Yan‘s wrestling and takedowns, but the rematch saw the reigning champion put the pressure on. After 5 grueling rounds in the co-main event, ‘Funk Master’ silenced his critics and unified the bantamweight titles.

Aljamain Sterling received praise for his UFC 273 win over Petr Yan

Twitter erupted to celebrate Funkmaster’s win over the interim champion, Petr Yan. The 32-year-old mixed martial artist proved his naysayers wrong, as he finally claimed the title of being the undisputed king in the 135 lbs division.

Featherweight contender Bryce Mitchell offered his best regards to the master of funk.

MMA fans may have trolled the American fighter for the better part of 2021, but he proved everyone wrong at UFC 273.

The former bantamweight champion was not pleased with the decision and called for a rematch. Ariel Helwani shared Yan’s words in a tweet.

‘One Metric Ton of s**t talkers’ laid to rest, as the ‘Funk Master’ came out with his hands raised. Despite walking into the fight as an underdog, he ensured this time the bout saw a different outcome.

UFC President Dana White also took to Twitter to share his take on the fight. It was quite clear that UFC’s head was pleased with Sterling’s performance as he put on a dominant display with his elite wrestling.

Fellow bantamweight fighter Vince Morales also congratulated Sterling as he made history tonight.

King of cringe and former two-weight champion, Henry Cejudo, stated that the entire bantamweight division simply ‘sucks’. 

Heavyweight kingpin Francis Ngannou called out the MMA community to respect ‘Funk Master’.

Sterling wasted no time and called out the former bantamweight champion, TJ Dillashaw, who recently returned from his 2-year suspension. The former champion fired back at the champion on Twitter.

Welterweight contender Belal Muhammad believes Petr Yan let the emotions take over.
