Dana White, the UFC CEO, is no stranger to controversy when it comes to the Octagon and his million-dollar promotion. However, this time the criticism stems from an event outside the UFC. White added fuel to the fire when he shared a clip on his Instagram, promoting the ‘Power Slap’ league.

Slap fighting, a relatively new phenomenon, gained attention through viral clips of events shared online. In this sport, the goal is to knock out the opponent with a single slap, with no defensive tactics or movement allowed. Slap fighting has faced scrutiny due to perceived dangers and safety concerns. This league, backed by the UFC and launched by White, focuses on slap fighting. However, fans weren’t pleased with the video shared by White, particularly in the wake of UFC Fight Night: Fiziev vs. Gamrot, having witnessed a horrifying end to the much-awaited main event!

Fan reactions on social media varied, with many expressing disappointment and disbelief at the timing of White’s promotion. Following an injury to a UFC fighter Rafael Fiziev and a perceived lackluster UFC event.

It occurred when Fiziev launched a powerful right-leg kick, which Gamrot effectively defended. Without a moment to reset, Fiziev visibly experienced pain and fell to the mat. Gamrot swiftly pounced on him and landed a series of punches, prompting referee Herb Dean to step in and halt the bout.

Most fans were concerned about Fiziev and his injury.  They also showed their distaste for White promoting such an event right after a fan-favorite fighter sustained a devastating loss due to the aforementioned injury.

“WE DONT CARE RIP FIZIEV”

“Fizeiv just broke his knee and you’re posting powerslap”

“Promoting some bullsh*t right after an actual athlete get injured in a real fight is insane”

“We just saw one of the best LW’s in the world snap his left knee and just watched a dead card and this guy is posting power slap. Come on dawg”

“Fiziev just died and bros promoting slapping”

Many fans expressed their disinterest in ‘Power Slap’ or slap fighting in general and shared their feelings in the comments.

“Literally no one cares”

“Please no, power slap is garbage”

Fans were also quick to call out Dana White for comments he has made in the past regarding other major sports.

“This is the same guy who said Football is the least talented sport in the world 😂, advertising a slap for slap contest”

In light of these reactions, Dana White’s foray into promoting slap fighting faces significant backlash from fans and figures in combat sports. In fact, medical professionals have also commented on the dangers of slapfighting.

‘Power Slap’ may not be as safe as White claims

Former UFC fighter Brendan Schaub was among the first to criticize the sport. Labeling it the “stupidest s***” he’s ever seen and voicing concerns about its potential harm to MMA due to White’s involvement.

Boxing promoter and manager Sam Jones also voiced his condemnation, retweeting a video showcasing the sport’s most extreme moments and expressing disbelief that Dana White, who claims to prioritize fighters’ health, endorses such a sport.

Experts have warned that the event poses a significant risk of causing long-lasting physical harm to participants.

In ‘Power Slap’, participants face penalties for any movements or flinches that could lessen the impact of a head blow. As explained by Consultant Neurologist Professor Nikos Evangelou from Nottingham University Hospital, blows to the head at certain angles can result in rotational forces on the brain. Which he describes as a recipe for disaster! He also emphasized the likelihood of more serious brain injuries resulting from this activity.
