Is Michael Bisping's warrior spirit enough to overcome his relentless health battles?

Michael Bisping has been hospitalized again and is en route to the operation theatre. The former UFC middleweight champion had quite a bit of trouble with his health lately. He has made trips to the hospital for his spine, knees, and neck. This time, it’s his neck that needs another surgery.

Back in 2021, ‘The Count’ underwent an anterior cervical discectomy. This procedure helped fix a ruptured disc in his cervical vertebrae. With a couple of screws and a titanium plate in place, the disc removal procedure usually ensures permanent relief. But Bisping wasn’t that lucky! Even though the procedure was successful and the former fighter showed that through a handful of post-operation pictures, the problems came back to haunt him again.

Earlier in August 2024, Bisping underwent another disc replacement surgery on his neck. Unfortunately, it didn’t offer him the relief that he desired. Hence, the procedure had to be repeated once again. Taking to Instagram, the former UFC champion announced, “Double neck surgery today, hopefully a success. It’s Been 18 months of insane agony. Headaches and massive discomfort. I had a disc replacement 6 weeks ago which provided zero relief. Hopefully the 2 fusions today get the job done.”

But here’s the twist! In another IG post, the 44-year-old UFC analyst asked the fighting community to wish his wife a happy birthday. After all, she was the one who stayed by his side when his physical strength gave way. Michael Bisping shared a picture of himself and his wife while preparing for the 3rd neck surgery and wrote, “Not the best pic of me for obvious reasons but I couldn’t have endured the last 18 months with out Rebecca by my side. Physically it’s been tough but the mental struggle has been much more of a battle. Hopefully this is a thing of the past now but anyway cry me a river 😂Please join me in wishing @rebeccabisping a happy birthday.”

Many professional mixed martial artists and big guns from the UFC joined hands in wishing Rebecca Bisping a very happy birthday. But most of them had nothing but concern for the former middleweight champion. Let’s see what the UFC had to say.

As soon as Bisping shared the post, the fighting community rushed in to pray for the former champion. Maycee Barber personally knows how troubling a hospital visit can be. She empathetically joined hands and wrote, “Praying for you!!” Meanwhile, Ali Abdelaziz, the Dagestani team’s manager pushed forth a handful of praying emojis. Cub Swanson punched in a prayer emoji, as well, and wrote, “I hope it helps.”

Urijah Faber also joined in and commented, “Oh snap, heal up brotha.” Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson had a similar wish, as he wrote, “Heal fast bro bro.” Even TJ Dillashaw offered his wishes to ‘The Count’. His comment read, “Good luck my man.” And Renato Moicano wrote, “Speed recovery brother.”

The voice of UFC, Bruce Buffer, praised the former middleweight champion’s warrior spirit, as he wrote, “Best wishes for 100% recovery🙏 You got this Michael! Warrior Spirit Forever!!!” Meanwhile, Marvin Vettori urged him to keep fighting. He said, “Sport is good for health 😅 stay strong legend.” But it was Laura Sanko, who claimed that the commentary and analysts’ tables were incomplete without Bisping. She wrote, “Best wishes and quick recovery …we need you back!”

While a disc replacement procedure has the risk of damage to the nerves, which can lead to partial or complete paralysis, it’s the only option for many who are struggling with the intense pain an injury to the discs carries. With the prayers from the fighting community, things might go well for Bisping. After all, the procedures tend to have a high success rate.
