Former UFC title challenger and Bellator light heavyweight Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson has passed away aged 38. He was suffering from undisclosed illnesses over these last few months. In the wake of this tragic news, MMA fans are looking back at memories that this beloved fighter left.

‘Rumble’ retired in 2017 after his second loss to Daniel Cormier. He later returned to Bellator in 2021. However, his physical ailments forced him out of his light heavyweight title bout in September 2021. He never fought again after that. While in retirement, Johnson once spoke about helping cancer patients in 2017.

‘Rumble’ talked about his own personal encounters with cancer patients. While talking to Ariel Helwani, he revealed his grandfather had cancer. He also added he had friends whose family members had cancer. Johnson mentioned his desire to help all these people after watching their suffering. This was the motivation behind his focus on his medicinal marijuana company.

He also mentioned how the medication for cancer affects these patients, making them all the more miserable. “I think people take 10 pills at one time. You know what I mean? All because it’s cancer-related and whatnot. And those pills didn’t do anything for them, like nothing. They were still in pain. They were still feeling bad. The pills were actually making them feel worse.”

It was this pain that ‘Rumble wanted to help make easier. “I want to do something that can help the world and ease people’s pain… I want to do something positive like that. It’s not about the money… My focus is honestly like giving this stuff to the people that need it and people that deserve it.”

Anthony Johnson’s compassion for his fellow beings endeared him to fans even after his untimely death.

‘Rumble’ shared a heartfelt message to fans in 2021

Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson was scheduled to fight Vadim Nemkov for the Bellator light heavyweight championship in October 2021. However, health issues forced him out of the bout in September. After the bout was canceled, Johnson shared a message to his fans without going into the specifics of his physical condition.

“Never been this afraid of anything in my life but I’ve remained strong with the support of friends and family,” he wrote. He also mentioned that he was hoping to be back in 2022 by the grace of god. Sadly, that was not meant to be. Johnson succumbed to his illnesses, leaving behind a legacy of toughness inside the cage and kindness outside it.
