Who doesn’t love two men trading punches as the crowd cheers for them? That’s as far as the similarity between street fights and the MMA goes. While street fights are a lawless phenomenon, MMA thrives on the rules. And there is one man who has done both, Jorge Masvidal. Fighting has been a central theme in his life and he believes the difference between both forms of fighting is colossal. The major distinction lies when there is no man holding a gun or knife ready to put holes in your body inside the Octagon.
‘Gamebred’ came into popular consciousness with his street fighting videos with Kimbo Slice‘s prodigy, Ray. Later on, he transitioned to a career in MMA. With two decades of fighting and 52 professional MMA fights under his belt, the American spent the better part of his life, fighting. Boldness, charisma, and fortitude defined his fighting career. The 38-year-old recently turned some pages of his prolonged fighting career and shared some anecdotes from those.

The Miami native sat down with George Janko and in one segment, the host pointed out how in street fights there were no rules, no referee, no rounds, and a guy who might shoot you if one hit his guy “too hard”. Further, he asked Masvidal how MMA and street fights differed.
The retired MMA fighter mentioned both were “way different” and addressed the dangers of street fights. He said, “Not with my group in particular. But I went to other street fights that exactly did happen and people got stabbed and things like that. So it was definitely in the back of my mind that it could happen.”
But to protect himself, he would go with “protection”. The former UFC fighter wasn’t just showing up himself as the risks involved were high. He continued, “I wasn’t just showing up myself. I’d usually go with a couple fighters and a couple friends that could help out if help needed to be.”
“I felt secure, and I wanted to feel secure also going into this environment. Because I just want to worry about you and my boys are going to worry about your boys, you know,” he added later.
Lastly, the 35-17 record holder expressed gratitude as he never faced such a problem, all thanks to the people that accompanied him. He declared, “Because right before they broke out, they were people [who] would realize like you don’t want these problems, man. Because I’m coming in strong, man.”

Masvidal hung up his MMA gloves earlier this year as he slumped to his fourth consecutive defeat. He doesn’t have the same hunger he had once for fighting, as revealed later in the same interview. Currently, he is focused on his bare-knuckle fighting promotion, Gamebred Fighting Championship.
