In O’Neill’s case, it was her peculiar accent. While her accent resembles that of the Scottish people, it also has hints of Australian influence.

O’Neill was born in Irvine, Scotland, and was raised in Kilmarnock. She spent a good decade at the home of the largest Burns monument in Scotland. However, she then moved to Queensland, Australia. Without a doubt, she experienced quite a bit of change in the scenery. O’Neill now lives on the Gold Coast of Australia. However, she can often be spotted training at the Tiger Muay Thai gym in Phuket, Thailand.

Needless to say, the changing sceneries imparted a peculiar accent in her voice. This leads people to wonder about her origins. Talking to Mirror Fighting a few years back, O’Neill revealed the troubles she had to face because of her accent. She said, “It’s so bad. I’m living in Australia and everyone’s like ‘where are you from?’ then I’ll go home to visit my family in Scotland and people will say ‘where are you from?I’m like I don’t fit in anywhere! Nobody has any idea of my accent, so I call it my ‘Scaussie’ accent and every three words it changes from Scottish to Australian.”

But thankfully, staying with her father has helped ‘King’ take control of her accent and make it sound Scottish. Well, that’s true for when she’s mad. Donning the Scottish flag on her back, the flyweight fighter proudly fights out of Scotland, even though her accent needs some work. After all, she has already declared that she loves Scotland more than Australia. But she didn’t forget to credit Australia for making her the fighter she is today.

But how did the Scottish mixed martial artist find her way to the world of MMA? Well, her father didn’t just help O’Neill in her Scottish accent, but fighting as well.

How did her father help ‘King’ enter the MMA world?

Just before moving to Australia, O’Neill began training in the art of kickboxing. After all, her father is also a fighter. When they moved to Australia, O’Neill’s father opened up his own MMA promotion. Looking at her father, she often wanted to get involved in the action. She took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA lessons and, after pleading with her father for a couple of years; she got the chance to compete when she was just 15 years old.

The UFC flyweight contender wanted to be the first-ever female to compete in her father’s MMA promotion. However, the wish didn’t come to fruition. Despite losing the first couple of her amateur fights, O’Neill went on an impressive 9-fight win streak in her professional MMA career, before facing defeat against Jennifer Maia, and then Ariane Lipski. The peculiar thing about both losses is they occurred when Leon Edwards fought in the main event. It might just be a coincidence.

Now, O’Neill is all set to turn her 2-fight losing streak upside down as she gets ready to fight Luana Santos at UFC 305. Will she be able to claim a victory at the RAC Arena? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
