Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya are each other’s nemesis. The rivalry between the two goes back to their kickboxing days. They faced each other twice in kickboxing, both of which Pereira won and continued into the UFC.

In fact, Adesanya talking trash about ‘Poatan’ in an interview in his UFC days is what spurred the Brazilian to join the UFC. Their epic trilogy in the octagon is among the best in the sport’s history. And their rivalry seems to be moving into new and surprising avenue- boxing.

Israel Adesanya was in Saudi Arabia to support Francis Ngannou in his bout against Tyson Fury . The Cameroonian shocked the world by putting up an excellent fight, even managing to knock down Fury in the third round.

Ngannou lost a controversial, one-point decision to the lineal boxing heavyweight and WBC champion on debut. After the fight, Adesanya posted a clip of his own boxing match. He wrote that while boxing was a beautiful sport; it was very corrupt.

He recalled being treated unfairly by the referee in the ring and concluded by declaring that he will not never box again due to this corruption. Many see this as an oblique reference to the Ngannou-Fury decision, which a large section of fans feel should have gone to Ngannou.

“Boxing as a sport is beautiful. Boxing as a business is corrupt as fuck!… Anywhore, I’ve done my time in boxing as a “rookie” to the game and it felt easy for me. I decided to pursue MMA because in my heart as a kickboxer I knew some nerd in pjs made of sandpaper could beat me without throwing a single strike. Having to learn a whole new set of skills from scratch was very humbling, but it paid off in the long run 😜. It was fun but I’ll never box again, I prefer to use all my weapons in a real fight‼️” he wrote in the caption. And, of course, Pereira followed suit and made his own boxing plans clear.

Pereira floats a potential boxing match in 2027

Soon after, Alex Pereira posted his own boxing clip on his official Instagram account. Unlike Adesanya, who swore to never box again, ‘Poatan’ wrote that he might be up for a boxing match in 2027. “Maybe I’ll do a boxing fight in 2027 🗿,” Poatan captioned the post.

This might be a shot at Adesanya as the Kiwi recently joked with in n interview from Saudi that he will not be back from his hiatus until 2027. ‘Izzy’ lost his middleweight title to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 last month and has taken a break from fighting. While he may have suggested he will not be back until ’27, that is probably a joke. And fans were quick to pick up on this.

Fans think ‘Poatan’ is obsessed with ‘Izzy’

Ngannou has proven himself to be the greatest heavyweight in all of combat sports, with his exquisite performance against Fury. And it is a shame that Adesanya has closed the door on boxing. Given their world-class striking abilities, an Adesanya-Pereira boxing match would have been great.
