Are UFC's Compliance Pay disparities fair, or do they undervalue rising stars like Chimaev?

UFC 308 was a grand card in a year that has had no shortage of great cards. Headlined by a cracking fight between Max Holloway and featherweight champ Ilia Topuria, where the latter successfully defended his title for the first time and an even more shocking co-main event, the card lived up to its hype.

As usual, the UFC, in partnership with its official outfitting partner Venum, paid out a six-figure total in Compliance Pay, this time amounting to $252,000 for the Abu Dhabi card, taking the total lifetime payouts to over $29 million. Compliance Pay, of course, is paid to fighters for following the promotion’s outfitting guidelines as well as the number of fights and championship status in the promotion. Let’s take a look at how much the fighters on the UFC 308 card made in Compliance Pay.

Ilia Topuria made his first successful title defense at UFC 308. With victories over arguably the two best featherweights in the history of the sport- Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway under his belt the same year, ‘El Matador’ is in the ‘Fighter of the Year’ conversation. Since he is the champ, Topuria received the highest tier Compliance Pay of $42,000 at UFC 308.

On the other hand, Holloway, who made his thirtieth UFC appearance on October 26, received $32,000 in Compliance Pay. In the co-main event, Khamzat Chimaev shocked the world by submitting the legendary Robert Whittaker in the very first round, not only winning the bout but also giving him a horrific injury. The relative newcomer Chimaev received $6,000, while the much more experienced Whittaker made more than three times more at $21,000 in Compliance Pay for UFC 308. Now let us take a look at how much the other stars on the main card made in Compliance Pay.

Magomed Ankalaev protected his #2 ranking and top title contender status in the 205lbs division by defeating #5 ranked Aleksandar Rakic via a unanimous decision in a largely uneventful fight. For their main card bout, Ankalaev got $11,000 and Rakic walked home $6,000 richer in Compliance Pay.
