UFC middleweight Paulo Costa has been tussling with the promotion over his contract for months now. The Brazilian powerhouse was in talks to fight Robert Whittaker at UFC 284. However, the fight fell apart after Costa and the UFC could not reach an agreement.
Costa last entered the octagon against Luke Rockhold at UFC 278 in August 2021. He won the contest via unanimous decision and hasn’t fought since.
In the months that followed, ‘Borrachinha’ got into a rivalry with Khamzat Chimaev. Despite several call-outs to the Chechen, UFC eventually matched Costa against Whittaker. Now, talks of Chimaev and Whittaker facing each other are gaining traction, and Costa has chimed in on the same.

He said, “I’m not sure that fight’s going to happen but… Yeah. Just because Chimaev, The Gourmet Chen Chen, he’s avoided fights, the middleweight fights. Middleweight, top elite fighters.”
“But if it happens, I think Whittaker has an advantage above him.”

From his revelation, it appears Costa’s contract situation is still unsolved. The Brazilian has fought top middleweight contenders like Israel Adesanya and Marvin Vettori and legends like Yoel Romero.
Now it seems like Costa is unwilling to provide his services unless he gets a better contract.
