Donn Davis sent a wave of joy for Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire, when he released the featherweight fighter from the PFL contract without any conditions. The former Bellator champion had been asking for an early release from the fight promotion ever since he got upset about being out of action for a long time, back in December 2024. However, one of his tweets calling out Francis Ngannou to form a fighters’ union seemed to have done the job that he wanted for ages. And now, he has set his eyes on a fight in the Octagon.

‘Pitbull’ took to X and revealed his apparent desire to fight Alexander Volkanovski under the banner of UFC. He wrote, “Hi [Alexander Volkanovski].” The matchup would be a perfect one, don’t you think? ‘The Great’ is 36 years old, while ‘Pitbull’ is rocking on 37. On top of that, both fighters have about the same weight and a competitive fighting style.

However, it all depends on Dana White and Co. Well, the UFC head honcho has often been critical of Davis and the PFL. During the press conference for UFC 310, he said, “Listen, the last couple of months we’ve been talking a lot about the PFL, you know? They’re canceling a lot of shows, I know that a lot of guys that are supposed to fight aren’t fighting and I mean, you guys know what the f–k is going on.” And that was the reason why fighters wanted to move to the UFC.

Is Pitbull's call-out of Volkanovski the fight UFC needs to shake things up?

Have an interesting take?

The last time ‘Pitbull’ entered a cage was when he was competing against Jeremy Kennedy at Bellator Champions Series. He won the bout via KO in the third round and became the champion. This fight went down on 22nd March 2024. However, the featherweight fighter took to X and claimed that he hadn’t fought since February. On top of that, he was told that he would get to fight in December but later found out that his opponent was pitted against someone else.

He had been lashing out and asking for a release, but to no avail. But on the 14th of January 2025, ‘Pitbull’ tweeted, “Hey @francis_ngannou are you aware of all the absurd things PFL is doing to fighters and putting on the new contracts? Will you ever speak up for us? I’m thinking it’s time we start a PFL Fighters Union. What do you think?” Needless to say, Davis and Co. could not afford that.

Soon after that, ‘Pitbull’ revealed the real reason why he tagged ‘The Predator’ in his tweet. And it was because of the former UFC heavyweight champion’s position in the fight promotion. He has become an executive in the PFL and has talked about taking the right steps for the fights. No doubt, ‘Pitbull’ believed Ngannou would help him out of the rut.

As of now, White and Volkanovski are yet to respond to ‘Pitbull’s demand. And if it happens, it’d be nothing short of an exciting fight. What do you think of ‘Pitbull’s release from PFL? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
