The UFC and Dana White have come under fire from fighters, experts, and advocates for indulging in shady business practices. Unfair fighter pay, lack of medical insurance for fighters, and preventing in-cage sponsors are some of the most common criticisms levied at the promotion. It is also accused of engaging in monopolistic business practices. It has bought out competitors and has 90% of the market share.

Recently, in bad news for the UFC, the UFC Antitrust lawsuit brought against it by many former fighters was recently granted class certification and fast-tracked by a Nevada court. And one of the attorneys for the fighters has made a shocking revelation about the promotion’s world titles.

Attorney Rob Massey gave an interview to ‘MMA UNCENSORED’ on YouTube. During the interview, Massey said that even the Athletic Commissions sanctioning UFC fights are exposing themselves to liability as the UFC’s world titles are misrepresented to the public as world titles, when in fact are only titles of the promotion.

“I honestly think the athletic commissions are exposing themselves to liability because they are sanctioning as the sport world title fights to the general public.”

He also revealed that UFC executives have admitted in testimony to Congress that their world titles are not actually world titles, but only ceremonial.

“And in fact, UFC’s own executive officers are going to Congress and saying our belts aren’t real, they’re fake. They’re ceremonial. It’s right in their promotional agreement: ‘Our belts are ceremonial’, they’re not real.”

Earlier in the interview, the attorney had suggested that the world title should be divorced from the promotions. In boxing, for instance, sanctioning bodies such as the WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF control the titles in boxing. No boxing promoter has the authority to announce champions. The UFC however, serves as the promoter and the sanctioning body as does ONE FC, Bellator, and PFL. Maysey, however, wants to see a common world title for the sport of MMA controlled by a separate sanctioning body.

“We gotta separate title from promoter. Because what’s going on with when the title is controlled by the promotion, it’s not sport. And that’s how they get to dictate what you have to sign otherwise everybody has to compete,” he said.

The UFC Antitrust lawsuit could see it shell out billions of dollars and change how the promotion negotiates contracts. The UFC has long been accused of exploiting its fighters. The lawsuit being fast-tracked means we will know whether there is merit to those allegations pretty soon.
