Jon Jones was the light heavyweight division’s worst nightmare for the majority of his career. He was dubbed the next big thing in the UFC following his debut win at 205 pounds. Fast forward 16 years, and Jones is still accomplishing the same thing, but this time in the heavyweight category, where he is the undisputed champion. However, one cannot reach the top in the UFC without being a ruthless man, and we’re not talking about being so just inside the Octagon. So when Chael Sonnen picked up his camera for a social media post today, he chose to highlight the precise moment when ‘Bones’ unveiled his evil side to the world.
Jones is currently scheduled to headline UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden against former two-time champion Stipe Miocic. So the MMA world is in raptures about the much-anticipated fight and the fighters. Being a part of the same movement, UFC legend Chael Sonnen decided to talk about the heavyweight king and how he revealed his true ruthless side by going against Khabib Nurmagomedov’s request of making ‘The Eagle’ the number one P4P fighter after his retirement fight.
Taking to his Instagram, Sonnen recalled the day when Khabib’s mixed martial arts career ended after the death of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. After his final bout in October 2020, he retired with a perfect 29-0 record. As a result, ‘The Eagle’ then asked Dana White to give him the top spot on the P4P list, even asking his fans to voice out in support of his promotion. A special request that even the UFC accepted. However, this did not sit well with Jon Jones, as he occupied the number one fighter on the P4P list.

So without hesitation, Jones expressed his outrage about how unfair the decision had been towards him. A moment that, according to Chael Sonnen, revealed the dark side of the heavyweight champion. He said, “Now, you are in the death of Khabib’s career, which largely had to do with the death of his father. Jon Jones knew those things. (But) he spoke up, and he was furious. And I loved it about Jon. I loved it because he gave us a glimpse into who he is truly as a competitor, and he is ruthless and he will operate without heart, and he doesn’t want some of it. He wants to take it all.”

Jon Jones made sure to let his disgust known through a series of tweets aimed at the UFC for the decision. But now that Khabib Nurmagomedov is long gone, it is good to guess that Jones holds no ill feelings towards the undisputed fighter who left the UFC while at the very top. In fact, ‘Bones’ even recently heaped praise on the lightweight fighter despite their bad blood in the past.

Such was his caliber and personality that he even earned praise from ‘Bones’. The heavyweight champion said, “I love what Khabib represents. We’ve had our differences in the past. I’ve made some quotes about him. But there’s never really been a real beef. I love the way he carries himself as a Muslim. I love the way he represents his country. I love the businessman that he is. He just seems like a stand-up guy. He gives back to others. He’s a stand-up guy. He’s an admirable man. I appreciate his existence.”
Well, fans would be glad to see that there is no bad blood between the two fighters. At least that’s what Jon Jones likes to believe. However, the two will remain fierce competitors whenever the conversation is about being the true MMA GOAT. But for now, Jones has to achieve another feat at UFC 309 by defending his heavyweight title for the first time against Stipe Miocic. What do you think? Will ‘Bones’ be able to defend his title?
