In ‘The Dark Knight,’ the Hollywood MMA icon played the role of Gambol, one of Gotham’s infamous crime bosses. Being on set with the ‘selfless’ Ledger proved to be an eye-opening experience for White. Back in the day, in one of his interviews with DjVlad, White shared a heartfelt confession about the legendary actor’s caliber. What’s more – the MMA icon had some strong words for fans who have misconceptions about Ledger’s acting.

Michael Jai White has immense respect for Heath Ledger
In a DJVlad interview that aired 4 years ago, the duo delved into White’s behind-the-scenes stories from the sets of ‘The Dark Knight.’ Vlad kicked off the interview, voicing a popular opinion, “Well, [when] you talk about dark movies, you’re in ‘The Dark Knight’ with Heath Ledger – who I would say… was by far the best ‘Joker.’”
Unsurprisingly, White seemed to agree. Vlad furthered his argument, adding his POV that he “would put him over Jack Nicholson.” Though Nicholson gave a “hell of a performance,” White believes that Ledger outdid his predecessor. When asked about Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker, the MMA icon exuberantly agreed that Ledger’s performance surpassed that of Jack Nicholson, who played the Joker in the first Batman movie.
Moreover, the Hollywood actor declared, “I give Heath Ledger heads and tails above Jack Nicholson.”
White was all praises Nicholson’s captivating presence. But he also hailed Ledger’s ability to transcend his handsome, leading-man persona and deliver a remarkable performance.

What’s more – the Spawn actor emphasized that Ledger’s portrayal of the ‘Joker’ was a testament to great acting. In the same vein, White added, “But Heath Ledger – to pull out that performance, when he’s this dashing, leading good-looking man and he leaves all of that aside…that’s the essence of what great acting is.”

But the Hollywood actor was very skeptical about one particular public opinion. Expressing his disappointment with fans’ misconceptions, the MMA veteran revealed, “One thing that upsets me is when people think he was doing this method acting.”
Dismissing all such notions, White shared anecdotes from their time on set, depicting the camaraderie the duo shared. He described Ledger as an “easygoing guy,” engaged in magic tricks and playfulness even while cameras were rolling. According to the MMA icon, Ledger even continuously explored different aspects of his character’s voice.
