Michael Chandler’s career has been on a downward slope since his “red panty night” was finalized with Conor McGregor. At 38 years old, the #7 UFC lightweight contender knows that time is ticking, so he has wisely shifted his focus away from the Dubliner and is now preparing for a massive clash with Charles Oliveira at UFC 309.
Chandler’s plans include claiming the belt and gauging what comes next in a rapidly evolving division. But while he is laser-focused on his journey, he’s also thinking about the future of the current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, and his title defenses. Let’s see what the 155fer has to say!

During a recent CBS interview with Shakiel Mahjouri, Michael Chandler opened up about the trajectory of his career and his changing perspective on the current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev. Chandler, who once considered himself one of Makhachev’s biggest critics, admitted that his views have shifted as the Dagestani champion’s dominance has gained momentum.
Chandler confessed, “Islam has done nothing but gain steam, and I have nothing but respect for him now. Trust me, I was the biggest hater. I was one of the biggest Islam haters, and I took a lot of flak for it, but he just hadn’t proven what he needed to prove to be the number one guy.” Reflecting on Makhachev’s rise to the title, Chandler pointed out the unconventional route Makhachev took to earn his shot. “I think he beat, like, a #12 guy to get there, then fought Bobby Green and got a title shot. So it was an interesting way to get to the title,” Chandler said.
Makhachev is reportedly set for a rematch with Arman Tsarukyan, which is expected to take place at UFC 311 next year. Chandler believes Makhachev will once again dominate with his grappling prowess but also emphasizes that Makhachev needs to stay sharp on his feet to maintain his edge. On the other hand, Chandler’s upcoming opponent, Charles Oliveira, has also weighed in on the Makhachev-Tsarukyan matchup. The Brazilian acknowledged that Makhachev is “a little step ahead” of the Armenian, despite the two having similar striking styles.
As Chandler looks ahead to his clash with Oliveira at UFC 309, he also shared his plans heading into 2025.

In an exclusive interview with MMA journalist Kevin Iole, Michael Chandler revealed his roadmap for the future following his upcoming clash with Charles Oliveira at UFC 309. The former Bellator champion is already eyeing a title shot, saying, “Let me give you my road real quick, all right? I’ve already got it mapped out—Charles Oliveira on November 16th, I beat him, and I become the number one contender. I’ll be sitting cage-side watching Islam and Arman in the first month or so of 2025.”
Chandler further expressed his belief that he would slay Conor McGregor, and wouldn’t slow down in his pursuit of greatness. He envisions a potential fight with McGregor in March, followed by a title bout against Islam Makhachev in June or July. Chandler then aims for a blockbuster showdown with Max Holloway, who has recently declared his intentions to move up to lightweight, with both fighters putting their respective UFC lightweight and BMF titles on the line.
This run could prove to be legendary if Chandler stays true to his word. Will his road map come to fruition? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
