It would be an understatement to call UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov the most hated figure in combat sports right now. This week, ‘The Eagle’ sparked a firestorm of controversy while promoting his cousin Usman Nurmagomedov’s upcoming title defense against Irish fighter Paul Hughes later this month. ‘The Eagle’ seized the moment to criticize both his longtime rival Conor McGregor and Ireland’s combat sports scene, aiming at two targets with one arrow.

He boldly declared, “Dagestan level of MMA here (raises arm high). But Ireland level, like not even half of Dagestan level.” Instead of gaining support, Nurmagomedov’s comments ignited outrage worldwide, particularly from megastar Conor McGregor. Attempting to defend his stance, ‘The Eagle’ took to X to assert Dagestan’s dominance in MMA. In his tweet, he claimed that Dagestanis “dominate amateur MMA” and challenged organizers to set up a “team vs. team” matchup, insisting Dagestan would easily triumph over a “world team” in amateur competition.

However, instead of calming the waters, it only intensified the backlash, drawing a fiery response from UFC star Tony Ferguson. In a heated reply, the former interim champ accused ‘The Eagle’ of deliberately avoiding a fight with him, reigniting a long-standing debate about their ill-fated history of scheduled matchups.

‘El Cucuy’ wrote: “Shut up, Fathead 🖕🦹‍♂️. You’re still my b*tch. You fought 2-round ‘pro’ padded fights leading up to the @ufc. Easy to talk when you’re not competing, ya eunuch ✂️🥜. Once a coward, always a coward 🍃. – Champ 🦹‍♂️ – CSO 🇺🇸🏆🇲🇽 #29-1 🍮 … okay, maybe 2.”

Ferguson’s allegations stem from the duo’s tumultuous history, marked by five failed attempts to organize their highly anticipated fight. The duo was supposed to battle it out in 2015 but Khabib Nurmagomedov withdrew just weeks before the fight, citing a rib injury. They rescheduled the bout for UFC on FOX 19 in April 2016, but this time ‘El Cucuy’ pulled out due to a lung issue.

The promotion attempted a third fight at UFC 209, with both fighters slated to compete for the interim lightweight championship. Unfortunately, complications from his weight cut hospitalized ‘The Eagle’ before the weigh-ins, forcing another cancellation. The UFC tried once more at UFC 223. But in an ironic twist, Ferguson tore his fibular collateral ligament after tripping over electrical cords during a pre-fight press event, rendering him unable to compete.

The scrap was finally slated to go down at UFC 249 in 2020. However, COVID-19 left ‘The Eagle’ stranded in Russia owing to travel restrictions. Talk about being ‘cursed’! However, the former title challenger’s comments pale in comparison to Conor McGregor’s scathing response aimed at the UFC Hall of Famer. Here’s a closer look at what ‘The Notorious’ had to say to Nurmagomedov.

Conor McGregor claps back at Khabib for disrespecting Irish MMA

After a period of silence, Conor McGregor has responded to Nurmagomedov’s recent remarks about the state of Irish fighters. The outspoken Irishman minced no words, launching a fiery counterattack at his longtime rival. True to his nature, McGregor hit back with a relentless “eye for an eye” approach, targeting Khabib and his comments about Ireland’s MMA scene.

In his latest post on X, the Irishman unleashed a sharp rant: “And all yous a–lickers around the way years stood on no ground for your own. Sickening stuff, look at yous now. You deserve exactly what’s there for yous, not a thing. Nothing. Traitorous b-ms. The Yellow teeth’s we call ya’s, Pea brains in a cage. Panache = zero. Creativity = poop. Wherewithal = fart. Embarrassing to me.”

As the war of words heats up, the debate over Khabib’s comments on Ireland’s standing in the world of MMA continues to stir opinions. Is ‘The Eagle’ justified in claiming that Ireland can’t produce fighters on the level of those from Russia, or is his attitude simply a reflection of his inflated ego? We want to hear your thoughts!
