In 2021, the MMA community said goodbye to one of the biggest names in the sport’s flyweight division as Joseph Benavidez announced his retirement. Joseph Benavidez marked an era in MMA. Admittedly, the American didn’t become a UFC champion, but he fought for the flyweight title four times (six in his career). But while he never won the UFC title in his 36-fight-long career, he did win in life.

The veteran began his career in the sport in 2006, finished it in 2021, fought 36 fights, won 28, and lost eight times. However, his biggest win in life came in 2009. It was the year when Benavidez met Megan Olivi back when they were both in a hotel in Mandalay Bay. They crossed paths in a lobby, and the sparks flew. The duo soon started dating and finally tied the knot in 2015.

Whether it be highs or lows, Olivi stood tall with her partner and became the pillar of support that he needed after every loss. In fact, one such moment was captured on camera and found its way to Reddit as a picture of Megan Olivi sitting on her knees and consoling the former UFC flyweight after a defeat is going viral on the internet. In the picture, Benavidez sits on a stool while the UFC presenter tries to console him from outside the cage, and she sits beside it.

This was after UFC Fight Night 172 in July 2020. In the main event, Deiveson Figueiredo defeated Joseph Benavidez via submission in the first round to retain the flyweight title. This was their second clash, after their first one at UFC Norfolk in February of the same year ended in a second-round KO win for the Brazilian. So you can understand how crushing this defeat was for Benavidez.
