The former undisputed lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov took to Twitter to congratulate Charles Oliveira after his standout performance against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269. Charles Oliveira was the first man to take home the title after the ‘Eagle’, retired in October 2020. Khabib had been a dominant force in the division till his retirement, going 29 -0 with 13 victories in the UFC, which made many fans think he retired too soon, given that he was still young and his performances showed consistent improvements.

When Oliveira defeated Michael Chandler to claim the lightweight belt, many thought Khabib would make a return for his title. When asked about this, he had this to say, “I’m gonna say at that time it was Khabib time. Now Charles time. I’m not gonna just jump to the media and say oh I’m gonna come back, fight with this guy, this is not interesting for me.”

Khabib further went on to say, “You know it’s like, like even if Charles Oliveira gonna beat like Justin Gaethje, Islam, Dustin, everybody. This is his time. I’m gonna be happy for him. You know it’s like I’m gonna send congratulations Charles you’re doing very good job right now.”

That’s exactly what the Dagestani fighter did after the Brazilian defended his belt. He sent out an honest message saying, “My congratulations Champ, you deserve this.” Charles Oliveira is a grappling wizard who holds the record for the most submission wins in the UFC.

On Saturday night, he added to that tally, submitting the gritty veteran Dustin Poirier in the third round via RNC submission. The fight was a fantastic display of Oliveiras skills, heart, and determination as he had to overcome major adversity in the first to get the victory.

What’s next for Charles Oliveira?

Sitting ringside at the Poirier vs Oliveira fight was Justin Gaethje, the next contender itching for his shot at the belt. Gaethje is coming off a phenomenal fight of the night victory over Michael Chandler at UFC 268. The former interim champion has been calling for his shot since before Oliveira won the belt, however, things didn’t pan out.

Now, however, things seem to be in Gaethje’s favor as the champ is open to fighting him, provided the money is right. As of now, though, all the champ wants to do is to go home and spend time with his family. Do you think Gaethje fights Oliveira next? Let us know in the comments.
