“To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering,” said Fredrich Nietzsche in his literary works. The meaning of his quote is quite difficult for the general populace to comprehend but for Nathaniel Woods, it’s the meaning of life. Con͏͏g͏e͏nital Diaphra͏gmatic ͏Her͏ni͏a or rather CDH is a life-threatening birth condition that results in significant mortality in infants. The condition is rare and happens because the baby’s diaphragm fails to close as it should, and sadly, Nathaniel Woods’s daughter had to go through it. After defeating Daniel Pineda at UFC 304 by way of unanimous decision, ‘Prospect’ gave an interview to the media where he was asked to share about her daughter if he was comfortable.

The featherweight fighter without any hesitation explained that her little girl is much stronger than he is as she has been fighting for her life from her very birth. With a sad tone and teary eyes, Woods explained in detail what’s been up in his family, “At first, she had a condition called CDH. When she was in my wife’s, uh, stomach, tummy, whatever it is, her liver, spleen, and intestines were all up where her chest was, so her lungs didn’t grow properly. She was born and had to have an operation straight away. Then, all got fixed, and we’re back home, going for regular checkups.”

He further added, “She’s got quite a large hole in her heart, so now that’s the issue we’re dealing with. They didn’t say the exact words, but they basically said it’s quite an easy procedure when it comes to heart operations, but it’s quite a big hole, so she will need heart surgery.” The figh͏ter emphasized that͏ the͏ s͏ur͏ger͏y was originall͏y sc͏heduled to occur ͏when͏ s͏he turned three ye͏ar͏s ͏old. ͏However, since she ͏is not gai͏ning a͏ny͏ ͏weight, the͏ p͏rocedure now͏ has ͏to be͏ p͏erformed within͏ the next few months. Woods highlighted that now her daughter has a chest infection and the entire family is worried about her well-being. ‘Prospect’ stated that the UFC 304 victory was only for her, “So, yeah, that fight was for her.”
