While discussing Daniel Cormier’s comment that Conor McGregor perhaps should take a tune-up fight as suggested by Joe Rogan and Mike Tyson, Sonnen pointed out one opponent that, like McGregor, has fought in both lightweight and welterweight divisions.

‘The Bad Guy’ offered ‘Maverick‘ Michael Chiesa as McGregor’s next opponent. Sonnen said, “That’s the one that has absolutely never been discussed by anybody [against Conor McGregor].”

Sonnen continued, ” I personally believe that there’s a gag order. I personally believe there’s a reason that Chiesa has never called out McGregor.” Thereafter, Sonnen talked about the incident ahead of UFC 223, where Conor McGregor threw a dolly at a bus that had Khabib Nurmagomedov in it.

Important to note that Chiesa was on the bus too, and unfortunately he got part of the glass into his eyes during the incident. Hence, following the incident, Chiesa had a legal battle with ‘The Notorious.’

Is Michael Chiesa vs. Conor McGregor a realistic matchup?

Conor McGregor is the biggest moneymaker for the UFC. A McGregor fight is a spectacle of the highest magnitude. Thus, the UFC always looks to put ‘The Notorious’ in the biggest matchups possible.

Also, the list of fighters that want to throw down with the Irish superstar is way too long, and Chiesa perhaps wouldn’t make the top five of it. Thus, it would be a false hope to anticipate a matchup between ‘Maverick’ and ‘The Notorious.’

Indeed, the matchup on paper, purely stylistically, is very captivating. That said, a showdown against the winner of Michael Chandler vs. Tony Ferguson would make more sense and would be a more fun fight for the UFC fans.
