Jon Jones‘ coach Brandon Gibson has predicted that ‘Bones’ will finish Stipe Miocic at UFC 309. The UFC heavyweight champion, of course, is gearing up to fight the former champ in a legacy-defining fight on November 16 at the iconic Madison Square Garden in ‘The Big Apple’. Expected to be his swan song, the coach sees Jones going out with a bang against Miocic, who is considered the heavyweight GOAT.
Gibson revealed in a recent interview, “It’s a very dangerous game, right? So if we can we can find a path towards victory, if anybody can take that path it’s Jon. We’re also going to be well-conditioned and prepared for five rounds, right? Like we’ve seen Stipe in these dog fights with Cormier and Junior dos Santos just going the distance”
While Gibson feels a finish is likely, he did clarify that Jones is not going to force things against the ever-dangerous Miocic, just to get that highlight reel. Despite all the chatter around the former champion being old and washed up, the coach revealed that the team was fully prepared to go five rounds with the best version of the UFC’s resident firefighter.

“But Jon approaches everything very tactically, right… You see that patience in Jon, so you know sometimes there’s nothing to rush, opportunity presents itself… But he’s not out there chasing or forcing anything. But I do see this fight not going to the judges. I think Jon’s gonna find a path to finish Stipe Miocic on November 16,” Gibson added.

Miocic, of course, is 42 and hasn’t fought for the past three years. His last bout, too, ended disastrously as he suffered a devastating leg-bending knockout at the hands of Francis Ngannou. Jones, on the other hand, is half a decade younger than the former champ. However, based on everything Gibson has said, and all the advantages Jones seemingly has over Miocic, it seems the champ is taking no chances in preparation. Especially since it will most likely be his last, which even the coach has nearly confirmed.
Tom Aspinall unlikely to ever face Jon Jones
The buzz around Jon Jones hanging his gloves after the Miocic fight is no secret. ‘Bones’ himself has all but confirmed this on social media, and Gibson, too revealed in the interview that they are treating UFC 309 as the champ’s ‘last rodeo’. This comes as a further blow to any Tom Aspinall fans who were hoping to see a Jones-Aspinall unification bout after UFC 309 (assuming of course, that ‘Bones’ defeats Miocic).

Will Jon Jones cement his legacy by finishing the heavyweight GOAT, Stipe Miocic, at UFC 309?
Have an interesting take?
The Brit is not only the interim heavyweight champ but is also seen as the future of the division, and the next evolution of the sport. After all, Aspinall is as good on his feet as he is on the ground. Granted he hasn’t had much of an opportunity to show off his grappling skills since he has knocked out almost all of his opponents in short order.
But ‘Honey Badger’ does have a black belt in BJJ and has won the British Open in all but the black belt category. This is why fans are so enthusiastic at the prospect of watching Jones fight Aspinall, since not only it could be a passing of the torch, but also a battle between two fighters who have hardly any holes in their game. Of course, there is still hope Jones changes his mind about retiring after the Miocic fight, but all signs point very much in the opposite direction.
