Dana White snubs Belal and Leon—Is this fair or a slap in the face?

The rematch between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad at UFC 304 is one of the much-anticipated fights in the UFC. Edwards would defend his welterweight championship belt for the third time. In case he wins, he would tie with Islam Makhachev for the number of successful title defenses. But that’s not the reason why Edwards vs. Muhammad is carrying so much heat. The rivalry between the two dates back to their headliner fight in 2021, where the fight had to be overturned.

With just 18 seconds reading on the clock in the second round of Edwards’ previous fight with Muhammad, ‘Remember The Name’ dropped down screaming in pain with his hands clutching his face. It was later revealed that ‘Rocky’ accidentally poked Muhammad in the eye and gifted him a wound in his lower cul de sac. And now, the welterweight champ gave a reality check to his opponent, quoting that everybody knew about his game plan. Needless to say, Edwards didn’t seem fazed by Muhammad’s grappling prowess.

Despite the heat between the fighters, the fight fans seem to believe that neither of them will receive the $100K bonus from Dana White. You heard it right! In a Reddit post shared on the 26th of July, 2024, an account claimed that neither of the fighters would be able to finish the fight. The caption read, “Leon Edwards talking shit about Belal not being able to finish anyone when he’s literally in the same position (neither of them are getting the 100K bonus lol).”

Without a doubt, the fight fans dropped down to the comments section with their opinion. Let’s see what they had to say.

Fight fans rally behind Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad not getting the finishing bonus

Out of his 14 wins in the UFC, the welterweight champion has won only 4 fights via finisher. Needless to say, the fight fans believed that Edwards was not an MMA athlete who tended to finish his bouts. Following his last KO victory over Kamaru Usman, Edwards has won two of his fights via decision. A fan took note of this and wrote, “He is still riding that head kick KO wave.” Another fan commented, “He can definitively Ko people, but he doesn’t focus on it.”

One of the fight fans seemed to believe that both the challenger and the champion were capable of finishing their fights. However, their recent acts on and outside the Octagon created doubts in the fans’ minds. One comment read, “I think this fight had to happen and I’m actually looking forward to it but both guys are being delusional.”

Some of the fans even believed that the fight wasn’t as exciting. It was indeed a method of pushing out the fights and letting the other welterweights have a chance to fight for the belt a bit sooner. The fan wrote, “To me this is a sort of fight that needs to happen to push the division forward but it’s like so meh as a headliner. I feel like nobody is super hyped, people have resorted to being meme Belal fans to hype this ffs”

However, many of the fight fans rallied behind Edwards’ skillset, claiming that he has defeated multiple opponents via KO. Needless to say, the champ has won quite a bit of fights in his career while losing just a couple of them. Many fans were confident in his fighting prowess. A comment read, “Leon hasn’t lost in 13 straight fights. He decisively beat Usman in the rematch, he’s clearly a special athlete mentally and physically. What are you talking about?”

Another fighter referred back to UFC 278 where ‘Rocky’ knocked out ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ with an impressive kick to the head. “Only one of them knocked Usman out cold,” read the comment. On top of that, a few fans seemed to believe that Edwards could have KOed Muhammad in their previous matchup, had he not injured his opponent with an eye poke. The fan wrote, “He almost ko’d belal. Go rewatch their fight, short as it was.”

But some fans stood in support of ‘Remember The Name’ with an example of Edwards’ last title defense against Colby Covington. It was indeed a fight that ended with a unanimous decision. The fan commented, “If I was Belal, in the press conference I would bring up him not being a KO artist and living off the Usman knockout. I would also mention Leon being very passive against Colby despite him insulting Leon’s family.”

Whether the welterweight title bout at UFC 304 ends with a finisher or not, is something that only time can tell. But that’s the only thing that will determine if Muhammad or Edwards would receive a $100L bonus from the UFC CEO. What are your thoughts on the bout? Let us know in the comments down below.
